When to get tested

When to get tested

Hi i want to get tested for Hepatitis A,B,C

I work in a stock room and pricked myself with a pin , i disposed of it straight away but im worried incase someone else pricked thereself with that exact pin in the past who could have hepatitis .

When after exposure should you get tested for the 3 , is 8 weeks too soon or what about 3 months ?

Im from the UK so i dont know if when i was young or at school if i would of had the A or B vaccination.

thanks

I wouldn't worry about getting tested the odds are so overwhelming in your favor that you haven't gotten anything.  It would be much more likely that you could have gotten it from a dentist or innoculation during your life than a pin ***** at random in a stock room.  Really relax this is nothing to worry about.

You are probably fine as far as Hepatitis C unless that was a bloody pin.  If there is any risk, it is vanishingly small.

jd

this is a test to see if we can say pinprick if its all one word.

Hi

Thanks for both of your reples , I've worked in there for about 2 years and have only hurt myself with pins maybe 5 x at most. I dispose of them when I hurt myself , I was worried because our stock comes in pretagged from a depot then once the customer buys the clothes or whatever it maybe and it gets detagged we use the tags and pins on other products that need tagged.

Obviously the tags and pins don't come through dripping with blood on them they are clean and silver looking but I was worried incase someone hurt thereselves on it and it was dried in.

Forgot to add when I hurt myself last time ( about 48 days ago) , it was my thumb I went to pick up a security pin from the box and pricked my thumb , it was only when I squeezed it a small bit of blood came out

While the virus can last a while I doubt it would last long enough to be shipped and unpacked and sit around...........I'm sure you are just fine Dino, don't worry about it.  Cheer up you are just fine!  :)

On a pin, in a perfect environment, the virus can live for 4 days at most. And that is under perfect laboratory conditions. You have nothing to worry about. Do you realize how many things would have to match up for that to happen? A person would have to ***** themselves. They would have to be HCV positive. The temperature and environment would have to be just right. the virus would have to live. Yu would have to ***** yourself  This is just not happening. Even health care workers have only a 2% chance of contracting HCV through a needlestick.

Hi sorry for digging this topic back up again but my previous posts today have been deleted!

I understand that hepatitis c can live for about 16 hours outside the body (correct me if I'm wrong) though once is dried up on a item such as a pin is the virus still active.

Also I used to take orlistat other known as Alli tablets, xenical , Roche as there counter names. One of there serious side effects was hepatitis ,  now I haven't heard many stories about this so I assume it's rare but does anyone know what types of hepatitis one can get from these tablets.

What test should I go for all  Hep A,B,C ?

Do you think the tests for hep a,b,c would be fine for a check on hepatitis . Have you heard of people contracting hepatitis from weight loss tablets or would you regard it "rare" as some articles are using. If so do you know what type of hepatitis could be contracted also is it correct in saying Hep C cant be contracted from a pill as i believe its only bodily fluid to bodily fluid.

I saw a case online when googling orlistat hepatitis of a woman having cholestatic hepatitis (im unaware of this type) from orlistat

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12499790

Thank you and i hope you reply back kind regards thedino

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver.  That product may cause liver inflammation that should resolve once the product is stopped.  That type of hepatitis is different from viral hepatitis.

If you are worried, there's no harm in asking your doc to test you for all 3....it may just ease your mind.

Good luck to you

I've never met anyone who got hepatitis from a weight loss pill - and hepatitis means inflammation of the liver really...your liver enzymes could be raised because of liver cell death - but this isn't viral it's not like hep C or A or B.

So it's not nearly the same thing whatsoever, I think there are a lot of more likely serious side effects you could get from Alli and those type meds rather than hep.

Ahh i get you now so hepatitis from this is basically damaging the liver but it isnt permanent (or lengthy) like the viral hepatitis .

So this type of hepatitis that can cause damage to liver is this the same sort of thing people who drink alot of alcohol get.

You'll be fine just try not to worry about it your chances of getting any hepatitis seem so low it's not worth thinking about, really.  We are pretty realistic about it in here because we have had the disease......we would tell you if there was something to worry about.

Thanks again , if i were to go for testing for abc would it give me a good indication of me being clear if i were to take the test 90+ days after exposure , just cause all this 6 month stuff seems to be a bit long . Is it true that >90% people will develop antibodies by 3 months and most people will have them by 6 weeks . Also i previously said i have hurt myself before in the stock room by standing on pins and pricking my finger before but if i were to get hep by this way it would still show on a antibody test even if it was a year or 6 months ago.

I just want to let all this behind me , before i was worried about hepatitis from my pin exposure i was first worried about HIV then a short bit later i thought about hepatitis aswell, This whole event has really left me worried , i know you and many others on here have said my exposure was very low for hepatitis (they said no risk over at hiv forum) though i just want it to be out of my mind so i can get on with my life . I also want to donate blood but im scared incase i have any hepatitis or hiv aswell from my exposures at work. Thats why i want to get tested , i had a negative hiv test 27 days after exposure and even my doc told me my exposure was extremely low risk and has advised me to come back 3 months later for a another test for peace of mind. , Hence why i want to get tested for ABC at the same time so i can feel relaxed that i dont have anything.  Im sorry to be rambling on and telling you all this but you are a great person to talk to thank you

Wait 90 days. If there is anything to detect it will be there by then.

I doubt you need to be concerned, but since you are determined to get it checked... that's when you should do it.
