allergic to milk thistle?

by pigeonca, Aug 11, 2007 04:13AM
It's been over 4 months since I treated, and as far as I know, I'm SVR.  Just got an UND on my blood tests taken last week.  So I figured now it's time to resume milk thistle, which I was using before I treated.  I've also added sam-e.  Started itching last night, and then when I got undressed for my shower this a.m., I noticed red blotches all over my body.  The ones on my thighs look exactly like the red blotches one gets at injection sites.

My first reaction was to investigate what's new in my regime, and other than the fact that my neighbor's night blooming jasmine is in full flower, it would seem that the milk thistle and/or the sam-e might be the culprit(s).  Has anybody heard of this or experienced it?  If so, what other healing herbs, vitamins, other supplements might help heal my liver?  Thanks,
pigeon

yup, i had a similar itching when i switched my brand of milk thistle from the homeopathic Schwabe to a Swiss non-homeopathic, herbal one.

i've learnt to trust homeopathic preparations because

1. you know exactly how much ingredient they have in it, and the milk thistle is almost always labelled Q or Mothertincture, specifying non-diluted, safely processed milk thistle

2. it often has other homeopathic remedies mixed with it, that complement the milk thistle's effects

3. you are guaranteed it won't have side effects, because their formulae  have been rigorously tested over a period of 200 years!

Pi,

I couldn't take Milk Thistle because when I did it made me wheeze.   I have an allergy problem and mild asthma.  Only certain things are triggers.   Milk Thistle is a weed.   Weeds and grasses and molds all make me wheeze.   SO, MT is not an option for me.   If you check out the side effects of MT you will see that it can aggravate hay fever and asthma.

I use Milk Thistle from a company called - Solgar, I have heard good things about them but I didn't investigate about other companies, I am using it for the last 2 months and havent notice any problems.

Could you please tell me what is - sam-e and what does it do ?

Good Luck.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I really don't know what sam-e is, but the lady at the health food store recommended it, and I can sometimes be a sucker for this sort of thing.

Hi Niceguy, I want to try the Schwabe milk thistle but can't find a seller.  Where do you get it please?

Thanks.

Do your allergies manifest as skin reactions, wheezing, runny nose, all of the above?  What do you take instead to help reduce fibrosis.  Would oxymatrine help?  It's funny, because I was an asthmatic child, outgrew it in my 20's for the most part, and then in my 50's the asthma returned.  Was told that this is rather common, that many people find childhood allergies coming back.  I'm wondering if it had anything to do with the hcv, but now that I'm ostensibly cured, I guess not.

yeah gotta feeling allergies are their own bane of existence...mine have actually gone away for the most part (they seem to get worse if I do  too much dairy, a little bit is okay though) anyway, when I take milk thistle, I feel hay fevery...it is a ragweed if I'm not mistaken, but there are other things I do take, which might take a phone call, cause sometimes when I list stuff it's an argument, whatever...the one thing that HR is sooo enthusiastic about is resveratrol, but I guess I told you that, he he ....

Will try to call you tomorrow.  Tonight I'm taking my resveratol in the form of pinot noir.
