Hi. Since no one else has stepped up to answer this, I'm going to try even though I'm not very knowledgeable about hepatitis that has advanced as it has with your husband.
What causes the encephalopathy is amonia, which comes from protein. People with advanced cirrhosis need to strictly limit their protein and watch what source it comes from (animal protein is the worst, I believe). I have no idea if handling the ascites will take care of that, but I think not. There are medications that they give people (lactulose?) that help.
You might try doing a search on the internet. There seems to be a lot of information about cirrhosis and ascites. Also, now would be a good time to get information from his doctors.
