author dies....'liver disease'..and open thread

by ringeding, Sep 13, 2004 12:00AM
alan edmonds died of 'liver disease'  he was a well known and respected author, journalist and documentary film maker....the head line reads.....he DIED OF LIVER DISEASE....when and how are people going to GET IT!!!....in order to educate and inform there has to be less fear associated with this damn disease....why is it that when a well known person dies of or with hep c, that we can not use this to educate.....it infuriates me!!
the headlines must begin to read.....DIED OF HEPATITIS C COMPLICATIONS!!!!!.....maybe its just me, but i find it irresponsible to keep it so hush hush.....man, this is shades of the 80's with HIV....the media and publisists not being totally forthcoming and thus leaving mainstream in the dark.....could this not be at the very least an opportunity for awareness......

just my thoughts

Hep C isn't the only liver disease, maybe it was something else?

Did he die of HepC or HepC complications?  There are other types of liver disease that aren't associate with Hepatitis C.

I agree that there isn't enough published about the hepatitis C virus and the awareness of hepatits C in all aspects of getting the virus, treating the virus and controlling the virus is really nill to none.  Why assume that this man died because of hepatitis C?  Is there other information published on him that leads us to believe that the article that you read was misinforming?

So, did you get Billy on some Meds?

by sher_, Sep 13, 2004 12:00AM
To: want 2live
Yes Billy got some sleeping aids and pain pills,Doc thought if he could get some sleep he wouldn't be as cranky. He is sleeping better but snaps occasionaly. At least we know what it is, thanks to you guys. His job as an architecural antique dealer requires alot of moving and hauling around so added stress to the joints. Thanks for asking so... How are you doing ???

I hope that Billy is doing better. I'm doing OK, shades of Riba rage while looking for a shrink with HepC experience.
I really think that Billy is going to need more than pain pills and sleep aids - keep an eye on him!

sher_:  now don't go making a 'life style' 'wild one' issue.  Millions of us got it thru transfusions, esp women who had 'female' and 'birth' related surgeries, ie hystroctomies, d and c's, c-sec, fertility treatments, endrometrosis.  Nevermind accidents and tramas.

As to Ray Charles:  he did shot heroin for 20+yrs.  and its been common knowledge in the music community that he did have hep c and that was a catalyst to a change in his habits. (no drinking, etc.).

As to why no one lists hep c as cause of death, would you if it were true?  or list 'complications due to chronic hep c?'

Most people wouldn't and won't.  And the immediate cause of death is usually something else, not liver failure.  Just as liver failure isn't always fatal.  So its always a mix of things and survivors just pick something w/in their comfort zone, not the deceased.  b/c the deceased is dead anyway.

Ohhh trust me I wasn't or wouldn't make it about lifestyle. I just kinda like Princess Margaret's life style is all I meant.I've read some great tales about in her life in the Caribe.. As far as Ray Charles the point I was trying to make was I had no clue and been trying to study this disease all year. I just see that when Celeb's like Rock Hudson died Aids seemed to come out of the shadows and other celebs started advocacy big time. It's my humble opinion we could as families and patients use a couple Celebs pushing for Bucks ya know?

Want...Yeah I was disappointed in the scripts the doc gave him too, I thought Ad more appropiate...I will keep an eye! Thanks!

hey there, good valid question....yes there is a bit more i know about this through friends that wasn't made public knowledge.

new s....well...your right as your opinion is yours and a valuable one....i guess i just think that there are opportunites to educate and we don't embrace them, thus setting us back some.  would i want the world to know...humm....yes....the good that comes from exposure out weights the uncomfortable i think.  but your right, when a family is grieving it certsainly isn't thier first priority is it...maybe more will be revealed in time with some of the people that have died with/from hep c and its possible complications, that can impact many

No need to wait for some celebrity to come along and make hep famous.  Start now each one of us on our own computers e-mail, every gov't official, and health care provider you can think of.Action at the grass roots level is vital, people with HIV were already doing this when Rock Hudson came along people new about HIV from local activists who fought fear and prejudice to get treatment.   The big shocker was that our Gorgeous Rock was one of us .
