I will echo MO's comments on the "biggies". From my sampling -- hepatologist and other -- in general, the 'bigger' the reputation, the less the ego. Somewhat ironic, but maybe they have less to prove because they already have the approval of their peers not to mention more of a sense of self worth/confidence in their field. They also seem more open to patient participation even to the point of modifying treatment as long as the ideas are somewhat reasonable. Both of my first two "biggies" were more than open to high-dosing riba at a time when it wasn't very popular.

The exception seems to be with dermatologists, at least with my small sampling. I found most of them to be a*ssholes and the "biggest" authority I spoke to just happened to be the biggest as*hole.

I don't remember having to wait long for an appointment. I think it was a month.

I heard about Dr. Afdhal through Jim and went for consult and really liked him alot. He, and Dr. D also, are just real down to earth guys. For 2 "biggies" they are both very approachable and will answer all your questions without having the attitude that you are bothering them - as 'some' of the "not so biggie" doctors have.:o)

Good luck,
MO

I will call Beth Israel hospital and hope I can get an appointment before my treatment ends ( 13 weeks) does it usually take longer than that or not?

I'm with Dr. Afdhal and think he's great!  He's knowledgeable, caring and listens well.  He's willing to listen to your priorities and treat accordingly.  I'm at the end of week 12 in the 3-arm Vertex trial.  The other guy in the area who seems good and is well-liked is Dr. Gordon at Lahey in Burlington.    --mkp
