i just had my hubby buy me organic carrot juice. it is a mixture with some  other fruits. very tasty indeed. I just decided after realizing the symptoms i have are indeed related to the HCV, to get serious about my liver. I have been ingesting everything i shouldn't have. I was diagnosed in 1996 with my enzyme levels close to 800. I was on interferon a few months but started having siezures at night. so stopped. the doctor just did blood work on me and he said my numbers were high. i have no idea about how to do this whole thing. we have no insurance so i am just checking out some sites to see how and what others have done. I have been getting shots of pain from the liver area. I have a ton of the symptoms. i know i should change my eating habits but unsure to what. What am i supposed to eat and drink?

i'm glad to hear funkasaurus and GoofyDad think juicing is ok, but now i'm worried about juicing after hearing the warning from Forseegood and others.

i just bought a juicer the other day, and got a great deal on it too. beet/carrot/cucumber for detox is what i'm doing lately, but no more than every other day. however, friday i got nauseous after it, which will happen once in a while but i don't know why.

usually i do beet/carrot/celery. i'll do other juices later if i think of anything good.

Yes i agree with funkasaurus. I have hep c also and have juiced for years. The idea  behind juicing is that your liver and body do not have to work so hard to digest the solids needed to get the phyto nutrients obtained from juicing. It is so good for you. The malic acid in apples reduces the sulfur in the body. Also add some broccoli is excellent.
Every thing in moderation. I juice maybe  2=3 times a week skipping a day or two in between. Also ( maximum milk thistle) will lower your count by 35%. Only one company makes it. It fools the body into thinking it is food and it is absorbed 10 times more than regular milk thistle. Trust me on this. Anyone  with hep c this is a mainsty for life.  Just google it. Peace and love to all

I have been juicing fresh fruits and vegetables for many years.  It amazes me how little people know about pure RAW fresh fruit and vegetable juices.  To be truly informed, pick up a copy of Dr. Norman Walker's "Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices - what's missing in your body?" Juices are not "concentrated" foods.  Fresh RAW fruit and veggie juices are simply the fruit or veggie minus the insoluble fiber.  There is still plenty of soluble fiber in the juices.  Most of us who juice get plenty of fiber in our diet anyway.  Juicing helps those of us with nutritional challenges (I have Hep C) obtain the essential nutritional elements (read: vitamins, minerals and most importantly enzymes) without having to take more supplements than we already take, or eat pounds and pounds of produce daily. About carrots and vitamin A - carrots do not contain vitamin A, they contain beta-carotene, a water-soluble vitamin A presursor, which your body needs to synthesize it's own vitamin A.  The kind of vitamin A everyone warns you about is the fat-soluble vitamin A found in fish oils, etc.

Anyway, unless you are borderline or full-blown diabetic, there is no such thing as too much carrot juice (as long as you don't mind that orange tinge to you skin - which can be frightening if u have hep!) If you do have sugar problems or insulin resistance, don't cut your carrot juice with water, simply add kale, cucumber, celery or other green veggies to lower the glycemic index of the juice.

just my 2 cents.

I'm one of the newkids to site. I am surprised about juice not being too good for our livers. I basically live on cranberry and grapefruit juice. I also drink a lot of green tea.

CDM,

Must confess don't even know where the Creme de' Nuit is right now. That riba does play hopscotch with the brain.

Dyce,

Treatment does a real number on taste buds/weight/digestion, etc. In my case I just had to go with what felt right or I would have lost too much weight. Still have some digestive issue -- probably from introducing too much fiber, too soon -- but my taste buds have returned to normal as has my weight almost. Just did a thallium stress treadmill test this afternoon. Lasted 15 minutes and got the ole' pumper up to 170 bph -- pretty much the same fitness level I had two years ago. Just hope the radioactive pics come out nice :)

also wanted to make the stipulation, I didn't before, that eating a small amount of carrots, less then one big one or a few baby ones... is a bit different then taking Vitamin A, which is a much more concentrated form of Vitamin A and is delivered to the system differently...

I don't take vitamin A, any vitamin A I need is from the few baby carrots I eat, a much better way to get it..I've spoken to upteen nutritionists about this, docs, whatever...we need a little bit for our eyes, etc. two baby carrots a day won't hurt...but that's different then taking a lot...

Was gonna buy 1 of the juicers , decided just to eat the fruit whole . I followed your advice on the mangos jim, real tasty . I'm a meat eater at heart but the further with this tx I go , the less I eat of it . Digestive seems to be a lot more sensative now . You were right , don't eat to many of the prunes and all at once, makes the pipes really gurgle after a sat nite steak .

Been meaning to mention something to you - a while back you were talking about your workouts when you were having chest pains.  You casually mentioned as I recall that you ran up 400 stairs at a stadium or gym or something.  I remember thinking to myself - wow I cant even crawl up two flights to my bedroom using my legs and arms!

Running shoes, $60.  Sweat band $10.  Running stadium steps at age 59 after 54 weeks of treatment - priceless!

The stadium steps thing was probably six weeks post treatment -- after working out daily -- when my hemoglobin was close to normal. During treatment it was quite a different story. As to the chest pains, I've spoken to two doctors and it's probably not heart related but more to do with either reflux, muscular, tissue, lungs, bowels, whatever -- and hopefully it will go away on its own so I don't have to do a lot of testing.

But to rule out the heart thing -- today I did a Thallium treadmill stress test. The pictures aren't in yet, but I did 15 minutes with the Bruce protocol and achieved a max heart rate of 170 bpm which is pretty decent considering I'm only 10 weeks post tx. I think any reasonable healthy 59 year old -- Hep C or no Hep C --  can do similar (and even better) if they make a committment to watch their weight, exercise on a regular basis, etc.

Again, during treatment, at one point, I could hardly cross the street without getting winded, was mostly glued to my couch, napped almost every afternoon, and rarely left the house after 4PM.

I wish you the best both in treatment and after.

Yeah, I always think of you when I am doing my Friday shot it seemed you were doing yours around same time as me.  You were having some bad reactions there for a while as was I.  I just did #47 at 7pm.  Expecting more of the same - maybe we will get a break this week.  You would think that this stuff would ease up a bit after all this time.

If you know Return as an Elvis tune you must of mature years.  All my kids know about Elvis is that he died on the potty!

"...People with chronic hepatitis should not take large doses of vitamin A, which can be toxic to the liver."

Complete article here but really don't know a lot about the subject other than the trigliceride factor.

that's why I talked about not eating a lot of carrots, but even a half carrot in juice probably wouldn't be that much of a problem, kinda like our ongoing conversation about booze, huh? ha ha!

And I agree with you about it being best to eat the whole fruit and veggie, the way nature intended....if youre going to juice, I would try cutting it with a lot of water, a lot...and watch the amounts of veggies, fruits, etc..if you do have metabolism probs, even without you should watch it...this is a field of interest of mine, not that I'm any expert...so this is just my opinion....
