cat claws possible transmission?

I came across this and it raised alot of questions:

ReportHey I'm just a little worried because my cat scratched someone with hepatitis c n later scratched me maybe 5 hrs later.... should I be worried

If razors can spread it then wouldn't cat's claws be the same.  It is blood to blood contact, after all.  I've been doing alot of thinking about transmission and how to avoid getting other people sick.  I pick at my skin and always have open sores so I think that's how I ended up with it.  There are many diff occasions I can come up with where it was possible for ME to get it. What are some non traditional modes of transmission that you guys have come up with?  Cat's claws?  Dog bites you after biting someone who is hcv pos?  I cringe every time my daughter scratches herself on something in the park or other public places, but I hope that's newbie paranoia lol.

I think technically, yes, it would be possible to spread Hep C if the cat scratched someone who had Hep C (and drew blood) and then scratched someone else (and drew blood). I doubt that it is common. How many cats run around scratching people with Hep C (drawing blood) and then scratching people without Hep C (drawing blood). I doubt it happen often, but it could.

I have several cats. I have a lot of scratches. But I rescued strays and ferals. They can be a bit harder to handle than most domestic cats. I cannot ever recall a cat scratching me and then running over and scratching someone else. Most cats are pretty shy and stick with one person. If they go up to others they are usually purring and want pets. If they are afraid, they hide. They are not running up to people with their claws out ready to scratch. In addition, if that type of transmission were common, most Veterinarians would probably have Hep C.Still, I agree it is most likely possible (just not common).

The dog scenario is technically possible, but pretty unlikely. If a dog bit a person with Hep C  (drawing blood) and then bit another person (drawing blood), it could be possible to transmit Hep C. But dogs that bite are generally deemed to have a problem and  would most likely go for further training and would not be allowed to run loose.

Your other fear, getting scratched on something in the park and then contracting Hep C through that scratch, while technically possible, would be be pretty negligible. You would have to scratch yourself with an object that had recently scratched someone else and that someone else would have to have Hep C. In both instances blood would have to be drawn. I think if that were an easy means of transmission, everyone would have Hep C.

OH is correct. Cats can be trained not to scratch (not feral cats, obviously) but it takes time and patience. do some internet searches on how.
Declawing a cat is a terrible thing to do it, Many Vets refuse to do it now.
While it is good to be careful by handling a scratcher as little as possible, training and maybe even wearing gloves when you must handle her, I think you are probably safe. for your peace of mind, get tested but I would be more worried by getting a pedicure.

my mom was gonna have them declawed but they actually amputate part of the toes.  She had the tip of a finger amputated and says she just can't do that to another cat.  Of course she doesn't know I have hcv yet and may change her mind.

Too many people don't train their animals.

Cats can be taught not to scratch just like dogs can be trained to walk on a slack leash.

Discipline for pets and kids ( and even adults, hear that congress?)
is a good thing, in my opinion :)

I have wrapped my cats in a towel to limit their movement. It helps.

Another option, if you are concerned about the transmission and if it is financially feasible, would be to get the cat's nails clipped by a cat grooming place or the veterinarian.

I agree with you but I also wonder how many people have it who haven't been tested?  The cat scratch thing worries me because my mom doesn't cut her cat's claws and they often get hooked in my skin.  Last time it happened while I was waiting on my test results and it drew alot of blood.  Then my mom said "yea they do it to me all the time".  I'm the one who would normally hold the cat down so she could cut her nails but I don't know if I should now.  I would say I just won't hold her but she jumps in my lap.  I don't know if I should just hold her and get it done when it needs it or take a chance on her hooking me and then one of the kids every time I go over there.
