I don't know much about this - but I can give you some info on the bleeding. That -in and of itself - is not the end of the world. When the liver is significantly damaged, blood can't flow through it. The blood attempts to re-route itself - forming the veins running through the esophogus (sp?) and stomach tissue. These are varicies. They can bleed and the bleeding can be very dangerous. But they can be repaired and that greatly reduces the risk.

I guess it depends largely on just what shape the liver is in. I don't know about kidneys.

so sorry about your pop...never lose hope, docs can only calculate depending on data and make educated guesses, they don't know all the answers all the time and most of them will be the first to tell you that...my younger sister had the exact same thing, liver and kidney failure... and was given under 5% of a chance of pulling through, we were told to make funeral arrangements, that was 4 years ago now, and she's still walking two miles a day....sending you healing vibes...

First, if  he isn't already, your dad should be seeing a liver specialist (hepatologist) as opposed to a GP or Gastroenterologist.

Your dad also may be a candidate for a liver transplant which could potentially both improve the quality and length of his life.

In order to get a transplant, your dad first must be evaluated at a liver transplant center. If your doctor's aren't doing this, you might want to independently contact a liver transplant center and arrange for this evaluation. Unfortunately, sometimes the medical system only works if you help drive it forward.

Here is a list of Medicare approve Liver Transplant Centers in the U.S., as of last year: http://tinyurl.com/ynort2

All the best to both of you.
