end stage liver disease, hep c and carcinoma

Hi everyone, i really need some advice. Im a 31 year old and my dad is 52, he has been an alcoholic for as long as i can remember. i hadnt seen my dad for nearly two years and got a call last week from my aunt who told that my dad was seriously ill in hospital with hep c, liver cirrosis (cirrhosis) and a carcinoma, so i went to see him and wasnt pleased with what i saw.
he was rushed into hospital at the weekend with fluid on the brain, jaundice and ascites, he has had the ascites for quite sometime and had it drained twice and both times it has been bloody. he has been in twice because he hasnt been taking the lactulose nor any other meds apart from the codiene he had been given. im not sure whats going on, the first time he got rushed in we where told he wasnt allowed paracetmol and this weekend told he is no longer allowed to take codiene, my dad has always had an opiete addiction. has my dad given up? and please can anyone tell how long a person can live with end stage liver disease please?. i cant bear to watch him die like this, they managed to bring him back this time but i was told by a consultant that it is end stage liver disease now. when i went to see him yesterday all he kept asking me to do was to go home and get his codiene which of course i would never do. he put us through hell when we where kids and lost everyone because alcohol and drugs.. what do i do?

I'm sorry for your situation.  While I understand the doctors worrying about drinking and drugs I'm not sure that right now is the time for them to cold turkey stop his codeine because he will go into withdrawl (withdrawal) and that on top of what else is going on seems rather harsh to me. That said I'm not a doctor but with end stage liver disease I can't see why not provide him some relief to the pain he must be in.

It's a very sad situation but as an alcoholic and addict they won't give him a liver transplant even if they could because they do try to make sure that they give the few they get to people who will respect them and take care of them I'm pretty sure.

I think you should try and find some good counciling for youself and take care of yourself as much as possible. I'm not sure there is anything you can do for your dad except to be there for him in his time of need if you choose to.

Good luck I'm very sorry for your situation.
