finished tx - when will hgb start to increase?

I finished tx yesterday and last night I took my last riba pills.  My hgb was tested yesterday and it is 9.2
My nurse said I should take procrit until my hgb reaches 10.  But I was wondering if my hgb will start to go up on it’s own since I am finished the riba – I would prefer not to do the procrit.  Anyone have an idea of when my hgb may start to go up on it’s own and how long it may take?  Thanks.   ginger

ginger...you must be so excited!! my hgb was 8.something finishing tx...i think in a few days my hgb started to come back....it came back to 13 in a month but then back down to 12.....at 3 months post it was still 12..i had aches for about 6 weeks along with other symptoms and after that things got way better...i would think you would just try to take it easy for a while...being off those drugs is a really good feeling...nice going and keep us posted....billy

Red blood cells live for about 90 days. Riba will probably stop destroying them in about a week. Your bone marrow is already trying to replenish your RBC's. My decision would depend on how quickly I needed normal energy. If I really needed an energy boost now then I would take the Procrit, but I'd be concerned about spiking my hgb. Cheers, GB

Hi - My HGB was in the low 9's for the final 2 months.  I did not take Procrit but I can say that within two weeks I was feeling substantially stronger and was no longer breathless. Within two months I felt as good as ever - as if nothing happened and my thyroid was shot!

Good luck and hope you recover well.

Congratulations on completing Tx and hoping the Best Results for you !

I'm 10 weeks post Tx - 60 weeks P/R ,

EOT - HgB , 11.3

Wk. 4 post HgB rose from 11.3 to 14.4 ...

HgB back to normal now, 16+ @ week 8 post CBC .. but, never got below 11 during Tx ...

I vote with Can Do .. I'd stop the Procrit ..

Aaron

Doctor added Procrit when I hit 9.2 and was still dropping.  Frankly it really hasn't helped much after 6 weeks as hmg climbed to 9.9 and then dropped back to 9.5.  Weak and pale, don't know how anyone could do this for 48 weeks.

I stopped when treatment stopped BUT my hemo was over 10 with the procrit (damn I took a lot of that stuff for a very long time...still it took some time to get back to 'normal however just getting up into the 12 area felt like I was 'normal' - note; I've never been quite normal ;)

Good luck to your AVR as CanCan says and that SVR too ;)
