gaining weight after tx

hi again, 2nd time to the board. dont let my name fool you, i have always been in shape through hard work at diet + ex. i am 48, 5'3", 120lbs. while on tx i gorged on candy, cooks, etc. i couldnt help it. even still, i lost 10lbs. which made me look like an anorexic. now i feel im starting to live up to my name 'oinker". ive gained the weight back and im starting to go higher than my normal weight even though i watch my diet and workout at the gym 3 to 4 days a week. does everyone seem to gain for a while after tx. does it eventually come off? nothing fits! my throid became hypo but ive been on meds for that for 2 months. thanks

I've treated numerous times and I've fortunately never been hypothyroid.  My thyroid always tests normal.  My diet both on and off treatment has always pretty much been eat what I want and I fortunately, eat a pretty balanced diet with my daily afternoon chocolate fix. That's one thing that I love that I won't give up.  I gave up alcohol and smoking well over 10 years ago.  I do lose weight though, whenever I'm on treatment.  I think that the reason is that I drink a ridiculous amount of water both on and off treatment.  For me, it cleans me out if you get my drift.  If I do eat too much, with all the water I drink, it seems to go away in the bathroom!!  Also,I eat salad every night both on and off treatment.  The thing that changes is that when I'm on treatment, all I eat for lunch every day is soup.  Homemade chicken vegatable soup.  Soup, soup, soup.  I'm obsessed with it because anything else I try to eat at that time of day makes me feel nauseated and I can't get it down.  When I come off of treatment I usually add a sandwich into my soup routine, or I'll actually go out to lunch sometimes and order something other than soup, but my diet 85% of the time still is soup at lunchtime.  I am 5-7 1/2 inches to 5-8" depending on who's doing the measuring and presently off of treatment I'm weighing 129 lbs.  On it, I bounced back and forth between 115-125.  I've been off treatment this time for about 2-1/2 mon.  I've also found that if I do allow myself to eat a large meal, it still nauseates me.  Usually, immmediately when I stop treatment, I forget this and go and eat these huge meals and feel like puking afterwards.  I guess I'm strange or it's that my liver is like that, or whatever.

love the name, even though you could hardly be known as one.I am one of the few that gained weight on tx. 35lbs (5"7" 105lbs at start of tx)  I too went hypo during tx and am having a real hard time losing weight (5 months post) I have slowed down on gaining but cannot lose it. Hopefully now that spring is here and I will be outside more that will help. Now that we have hypothyroidism and will have to keep an eye on that, it will be that much harder for us. If you find a way to lose the weight let me know. I am up for anything except putting more drugs into my body. We are both in our fortys too so that might have a little to do with it.

Did you clear the virus on tx? That is the most important thing. Weight gain is just a minor detail now in my book.

Good luck, Kim

My physician warned me about weight gain after tx due to my thyroid problems.  Seems he has had several patients gain weight excessively after tx and they are the ones who have had thyroid problems.  At the moment I have lost weight, but I still have ONE shot to go.  I  really need to gain some weight, am kinda worried about being overweight, but figure I will deal with that "side" once I get to it.  Thanks, layla, will have to check out that forum.

Did anyone notice the new thyroid forum here. It looks like it just started April 5th. Just thought I would mention it for those with thyroid issues. Have a good day. LL

Hi

During TX my weight stayed about the same. I was 5'9" 175#. I began working out more after TX. I have always had a craving for ice cream and had to work hard to stay away from it. About a month after TX my weight started to go up, I went to about 188# for a couple months, but have lost that, plus 5 extra pounds, I have leveled of to around 170 now. My thyroid checked good.

Keep a close eye on your thyroid and eat a healthy diet, I'll bet within 6 months you'll find a new weight not much different then your old one and level off.

            Blessings to ALL

I was just thinking about how great it was to pig out(no pun) on cakes, ice cream, cookies and candy bars and not gain an ounce while on Tx! I want back on the meds! ...not!
It is a matter of remembering I am no longer on tx and have to go back to the way I ate BEFORE tx. SIGH!

I'm on week 13/24 and I've gained 10 pounds!  All I want to eat is cheese, pasta, sugar - all the stuff I shouldn't be eating.  I have no desire for the good foods I used to eat.  I think it's comfort eating and not exercising.  So much for getting the one sx that I wouldn't have minded!

I'll worry about losing when I'm off tx.  Right now I just need some happiness even if it comes in a candy wrapper!

Take care

The business about healthy vetetarian food making you gag while on treatment...oh yeah!  Know what you're talking about.  Gimme the chocolate.

Actually, I wanted to say that the one thing that works for me to get veggies down is juicing.  I couldn't manage juicing every day like you're supposed to, but I make a big pitcher, freeze it in ice cube trays (with plastic wrap sealing them shut)--then put in a plastic bag in the freezer.  I drink it over a week, more or less.  Last time I made it with: carrots, apples, beets, parsley, celery, tangelo...I guess that's all.  Anyway, it's very nutrient dense, not processed other than freezing for less than a week, and the ONLY way I can get the veggies down.  I put 4/5 cubes in a pint jar, fill it half w/water, the rest of the way w/orange-apple juice, cap it, shake it, let it melt--drink some of it, add some more water & juice, shake, melt, drink some more....  Sometimes I do it twice a day.  It tastes good, refreshing, nutritious, helps your liquid needs.  Sometimes it can satisfy your desire for something sweet and keep you from being bad, too.

I've lost about 15 kilos (28lbs) and am on my last week of meds. My eating habits have changed dramatically over the last year with my body craving more halthy foods and smaller portions so I am eating about 5 small meals a day. I discussed the possibility of weight gain with my clinic sister last week and she said that if I stuck to my current eating lifestyle I should be OK, she indicated that many people crave more 'junk' when they finish and bigger meals and this doesn't help. I'm also convinced that a year of not drinking is a great help in weight loss! Still lets see how I go in the next month or so with weight!

I lost about 12# on meds while eating nothing but donuts, cookies and ice cream.  I'm a vegetarian and the thought of salads while I was on treatment would make me gag!

Since being off treatment as of December 3 - I am having a very hard time "re-training" my stomach (or mind).  I still crave sweets and have gained back all 12 pounds and am working on more by the way my clothes fit.

Although I looked/felt like a skeleton while on treatment, I was hoping to only gain back about half of what I lost.  Unfortunately, I just keep gaining.  My thyroid is perfectly normal - I've had it tested twice since going off treatment.

My advice to anyone on treatment:  Do you best to try to eat healthy.  If you are losing weight and think you can eat junk and not worry about it - believe me, when you go off treatment, you will pay.  The weight comes back on almost overnight!

Dude, oink oink. I lost 23lbs while on tx. I went from 173 down to 148ish. I am 6'3". I lived up to my nickname of lurch. I sure was glad to put on the weight. Looked straight out of a concentration camp.

Been off meds not for 10 months. Life is great. Made the cut of being negative at 6 months out. Hanging around the 170 range. My thyroid took a hit also. You all watch that thyroid ya hear.

Keep going all. Don't give in or give up. Pound on those stinkin lousy rot gut meds. Will your body to health. You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're right, the name dosen't fit someone your size and with your commitment to exercise.  I figure I gained 20 lbs during my 96 wks of tx, mostly due to ice cream which I rarely ate until tx.  That took me to 170 lbs on my 5.9" frame.  Also,it was due to lack of exercise due to some neurological complications during tx.  Now that we have some warm spring days, I'm back on my bike, so we'll see what that does.  Ice cream no longer has the appeal now that I'm 5 1/2 mo post tx.  I wish you the best,  Dave

I have to really watch my weight now since losing my thyroid on tx. I also was getting the anorexic look on tx but I am now gaining more easily than ever in my life. I was wearing a size 2 and I am 5'5". Now I am up to 135 and wearing an 8. Each time I was gaining too easily I had my thyroid checked and I warranted a med increase. I do think it will always be more of a problem now even with the correct thyroid med dose. I just gain so much more than before and more easily. Now need to lose 5 lbs. The real weight gain has been recent and I am 10 months post tx. This stinks! LL
