gallon of water

after my recent diagnosis the specialty clinic had me attend a class that explained a lot of stuff about the liver and the Interferon treatment. It was really a good class, and open to questions and insites. One of the things the nurse said that was presenting the class was that they found that Interferon patients seemed to do better on the stuff if they drank a gallon of water a day. This was the Oregon Clinic and considered the place to go here in Portland.

Just thought I would mention that for what it's worth.

yup, I know the feeling there...only so much reading I could do in this forum, especially at first...it was overwhelming...but take care of yourself, that's the main thing and learn in bits and pieces as you can handle it mentally. The fact that you are in here proves you want to learn and take care of yourself...it's a big start/

you are right is is rare, the thing is, it's a balance...for one thing, in latter stages, which is where I'm at, too much water can swell the abdomen making pain much worse, a wonderful way to spend the day...not.

Britta pitchers work great for the water thingy. Costco sells em pretty cheap and it really improves the water (which used to be good here, but not anymore).

the thing about fluids is lots of people will switch from the "drink lots of water" idea to drinking lots of pop, caffiine and/or sweet etc products that can really mess up their balance. I wish they would have mentioned this is the class. NOT to substitute other things.

I know the comfort food route too...although my blood sugars don't allow for much deviance.
One thing I found that's fun is to eat a sugarless chocolate coated Nestle's crunchy bar for breakfast to get my Riba down....grin....they are actually not bad....at least, there's dairy, protein and fat...
beat's the heck outta healthy cereals some mornings....there's only so much buttered toast or oatmeal one mouth can take....: )))))))))))  anyway, we can crunch to that!!!

it's kinda hard in here to be encouraged all the time...because much of what's covered is serious subject matter for hurting people, but I've notice there are quite a few real "caregivers" in here so don't get discouraged. For some this may be the only place they can vent cause they either don't have, or don't want to burden their families.....for others it provides a wealth of otherwise hard to find info.  try to keep your chin up....today was a really hard day for me....but we gotta keep trying.

Sorry, I was being facicious about the chicken fried steak. In my depression  I have been binging on the Standard American Diet (SAD). I know it is wearing me out.

I really don't want to start a lunch group, not yet merryBe, because everyone I have talked to that has Hep C has unloaded on me about their problems and I am too depressed to want to listen and I just want to focus on me and my diet and worse case scenarios (disablility income, post treatment employment, how much my current job loves me) and good forums like this and it's participants.

Also, there is only one documented death I know of from drinking too much water that was a soldier and it was an extreme situation way beyond a gallon. Too much water killing you is like the myth about the lady that combined aspiren with coca cola which created spanish fly and she died empaling herself on her gearshift nob.

If you are drinking a lot of water and it's from the tap, make sure you let it sit out all night so the chlorine residual bubbles off (boiling for tea or coffee also does this). Also, if your residence is old it might have lead and copper pipes so you want to let your water run for a minute or two before using it. And never cook or drink from the hot water tap. This stuff I know for sure, having worked  around water engineers.

yah, oiy, any club that would want me as a member......oh well, we don't get to choose all our suffering...or we'd all choose NONE....or get the other guy....wink/

Did tou just start as well?  Yes it was frightening, the night I went there were 100 new cases, and thousand new each month in Portland. It's no wonder they are so business end of the shtick.
anyway at least they seem to know their stuff...better that than the non-busy neophyte.

I always figure 30 years experience is a plus when your life is at stake.....we aren't just drying up runny noses here.  Keep me posted on how it goes. Maybe we can get a monthly heppers lunch group going???

that rule of half your weight in oz's of water may be wrong for some. it is a good to start at that amount but then adjust after trying for awhile. you can actually have a drowning effect on your body if you drink to much water.

When we have the unquenchable thirst so we drink gallons of water. Just a thought but as both Interferon and Ribavirin are water soluble does anyone know if we will be just flushing them away

Yeah, a fellow web foot finally!!!!!!

I go to the Oregon Clinic too and they didn't tell me that.specifically.
drink a lot yes, a gallon no.....stay hydrated for sure, but A. getting up to go 20 times gets old, and B. you can actually do more harm than good forcing too much fluid through because you can lose electrolyes doing that. (body salts essential to life).

a better solution is to keep water by your side and drink it whenever thirsty NOT pop and NOT caffiene or sugar products.

reason= pop has caffiene and/or phospheric and other acids like citric which can mess with your calcium and iron levels, any speed product acts as a diuretic draining blood of essential vitamins and minerals, and sugar messes with your pancreas/insulin levels already at risk with the SOC.

so, drink lots of water, it will aide in joints staying well during tx but don't over do...I did NOT feel any better overhydrated than normal.....if you are having seats/fevers you need more....your body kinda tells you that, but keeping a glass handy at all times means you'll drink adequately usually/
Just my opinion.  Which clinic are you at / doctor do you see?
If you don't mind me asking.

PS, medicine has backed of the old 8 glass a day model because it made people sick. too much hydration can be as hazardous to your health as not enough...in rare cases even fatal.
hope that helps.

The rule I was given if you weigh 150 lbs, then you need to drink 75 oz of H2o a day/. Yes that does keep you busy. I was very good at the begining, I must say I have been feeling awful and have not been drinking as much as I did in the beginning.

Fortunately, I'm a virtual recluse these days.  45 weeks going on 72 will do that to ya.

yeah, I think not liking to go to the bathroom is no reason at all for not drinking more water. I'm no expert on this subject, however, since I'm not going thru treatment yet. The only reason I wouldn't want to go to the loo would be if I saw Senator Craig walking in before me. . . . . . . . .

I better put a smiley face on this one.

When the pharmacist gave me training about how to inject peg and tips on how best to deal with SX, he said it was crucial to drink a lot of water, and that if I wasn't peeing once an hour I wasn't drinking enough!  *LOL*

Guess I must be doing something right coz my life revolves around the loo.

I try to drink lots of water, but for some reason (I don't know if related to this disease), I can't hold water that long now. So I would end up spending all day in the loo if I did this:-)

Omar Khayam writes this about the environment for love
"here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough, A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse--and Thou Beside me singing in the Wilderness--"

When on combo treatment, it just a little different.  " here with a syringe of Peg,  chilled and sweating beneath the covers in a cruel and lonely world where my company is a jug of water and the moans are my own'
