genotypes/ damage

Hi All

not been around for a while , hope you are all ok.

i have been wondering if there is a particular Genotype that causes more damage than others? like the way geno 3 is know for causing fatty livers, does 1,2 ,3 or 4 or indeed subgroups cause more damage?

would be very interested in data if possible

I have to this day not heard of any studies stating that certain genotypes cause more damage.

All I've heard is the same thing you did about 3 and that was some of the new info out of the Liver Meeting.  Nothing else I'm aware of.

I have heard that Geno 2 and 3 causes more damage quicker than G1 easier to treat but thats the other side of the coin.

Haven´t seen any studies about it, but if I remember right my doc said it was so .
Btw I "was" (SVR now) a geno3 had no fatty liver allthough quite fat also very little damage .

geno 3 s  are more common in north europe  where I come from than in the rest of the world . Many people i know of  here in Sweden geno 3s has
died between their 40s-50s , but they were all active alcohol and drug abusers.

So i think lifestile  is more importent than geno in that aspect, and as you probably know many people who are drinking and druging tend to lie and or minimise their problem.
I mean how well can you trust studies were such people has participatet (claiming their not such)!

Geno 3 (not 2) carries an increased risk for steatosis (NAFLD) post tx. I seem to recall it has less risk for post-tx HCC than other genotypes. Since being serum undetectable lowers, but does not eliminate the risk of HCC, there are different things the different genos may want to concentrate on post-tx to maintain their health. The obvious one for all genos is diet. There are also meds that can remove fatty infiltration, but they carry their own list of side effects. If I had been any other geno than 3, I would probably concentrate more on avoiding known carcinogens and do more research on cancer fighting diets.

According to what I have read, around 70% of genotype 3 suffer from something called Viral Steatosis... viral fatty liver. In contrary to other genotypes this kind of steatosis will go away automatically when SVR is achieved. Personally I did not have Viral Steatosis.

I've heard similarly, that geno 3 tends to have a higher incidence for fatty liver.  Some studies seem to point to geno 1b as the genotype with higher incidence of HCC, but there's doesn't appear to be enough data for clear conclusions.  Some literature and references footnoted here:

The HCV population that's considered more at risk for HCC are those individuals with active HBV or prior exposure to HBV -- the hep b seems to be more of a factor in hcv-related hcc than hcv genotype. ~eureka
