I believe your husbands bloating and gum disease comes from a diet too focused on “sugar” foods.  However, obviously a poor liver contributes to bloating because it cannot clear the toxins in the food we eat.  However, I believe your husband’s condition results from the following dietary condition:

The human body prefers an alkaline system.  Most pathogens that occupy our body are anerobic such as candida that do not prefer an oxygenated environment.   Microbes that are symbiotic are aerobic such as probiotics need an oxygenated environment.  If our body is alkaline and not ascetic, we have greater propensity to tolerate sudden increases in blood sugar.  (However our gums take the heat directly from sugar foods.  Brush your teeth immediately after eating an apple!)  Carbohydrates that quickly turn into sugar, glucose, are “bloating” and damaging to our body if they become excessive.  This happens if we eat too many high glycemic foods, or foods that turn into glucose too rapidly and cause an excessive rise in blood sugar.  Too much sugar in our blood causes putrification and bloating, much like the brewing of beer with grains and malts.  This adds to the acidification of our tissue.

If our body, again, in my opinion (IMO), is too acid from eating acid producing foods like animal protein (Read The China Study on the toxicity of animal protein.), the propensity of our body to create bloating, putrification, evidenced by gas production, is much higher.

IMO, our body needs carbohydrates for energy and protein for structural integrity.  If we eat too many high glycemic foods too abruptly we get a bloating, swelling and an inflammatory condition.  (Read the Perrocone Promise and others about the perils of inflammation.)  Our culture believes in a meal followed by desert (sugar).  Notice that if you eat a desert after a meal you get gas, which is a putrification process.

America has a diet that is “convenience” based, which means we eat mostly refined foods, such as white flower that quickly turns into blood glucose, sugar.  White rice that stores much better than brown rice and turns into blood sugar much faster than brown rice which does not store easily, is less “convenient” and slowly turns into glucose.  I suggest your husband “bite the bullet” and HONESTLY face the facts of his diet, but few people have the willpower to make this commitment.  High glycemic foods are addictive and it takes trust in nutrition and an insatiable craving for good health to make this adjustment.

There are fabulous liver health “experienced” people in this forum that can address the effects of sugar on the liver.  I also think that a weakened liver makes ingestion of high glycemic foods more inflammatory and bloating, but I defer to the experts in this forum on this matter.

I hope this helps. Forgive my bad spelling.  I am up with post-tx insomnia. The best.

For clarity: White rice, compared to brown rice, converts to blood sugar more quickly.  It is better to eat brown rice for this reason.

It sounds to me like he needs to see a dentist, his pain could be caused by gum disease. I also think he needs to see his doctor right away for the bloating, that should be evaluated right away. Good luck, I hope he feels better soon.

Hi there, Hep C can wreak havoc inside the mouth with the gums and bony structures.  He needs to get seen by the dentist because until that infection is cleaned out from under that gumline, the infection will get worse and worse, probably.  He would feel so much better after a dentist helps him out with deep cleaning and scaling.  They would probably put him on antibiotics, pain meds, and prescribe Peridex mouth rinse  (prescription).  It's a mouthwash that will kill every bit of bacteria in his mouth and help keep him infection-free after they clean the infection out.  Dentist can also prescribe Viscous Lidocaine  (mouthwash) that will numb the inside of his mouth, which also helps.

If he can't get to the dentist, brushing and flossing is a must IF he can do it safely (how are his platelets/wbcs)?   If he is OK on those, he needs to keep brushing no matter how uncomfortable it is.  Also, one of those little mouth tools (cheap - with single bristle on the end so he can clean good inbetween the teeth) is a good thing to hvae.  Brushing and doing mouth care after he eats anything, avoid sugary foods, soft drinks, anything with sugar in it, use Listerine mouthwash full strength at least 4 times a day. Waterpick and sonicare toothbrush are good.  OraGel and Biotene mouthwash and toothpaste are pretty good, but - the dentist will be the ticket to get rid of the infection that is in there now.  And then good home care with all the instructions the dentist will give him.  Best of luck.  Hope he feels better.

I agree with Kalio, sounds like 2 different issues. Does your husband know what stage liver disease?

Bloating could be caused by any number of things including IBS. See a good gastro and have them run some tests. An ultrasound should ber able to rule out fluid in the abdomen.
