Sodium: You may need to decrease the amount of sodium in your diet. Sodium causes your body to retain (hold on to) fluids. When your body holds on to fluids, you will have swelling. Is your abdomen also swollen?

Begin reading all food labels.
Avoid fast food and packaged foods.
Avoid restaurant food. If you must ask for low-sodium foods when you eat out. Most restaurant food is quite high in sodium, but most restaurants are also willing to prepare your food with less salt if you ask.
Don't add table salt to your food.
Don't drink water that has been softened using sodium.
Avoid Soy, barbecue, and teriyaki sauces.
Avoid pre-made soups.

Limit sodium to 2000 mg per day.

Here is a website for low sodium recipes.

If a low sodium diet doesn't work then the next step is maintaining a low sodium diet and treatment with diuretics.
Your doctor should have prescribed diuretics for you as they will help with the swelling of feet, ankles and legs. Spirolactone and furosemide (Lasix) are the most common. Yes are experiencing the complications of decompensated cirrhosis the final stage of liver disease.Low platelet count and edema (swelling) are two of many complications of this advanced form of cirrhosis. You will need a liver transplant some time in the future in order to continue living. Are you listed at a transplant center? You should also be monitored and every 6 months have an ultrasound or CT scan to look for signs of liver cancer, HCC which cirrhotics are prone to. There are many other complications occurring in your body and you need to be under the care of a hepatologist (liver doctor) in order to have the highest quality of life until you receive a new liver.

Good luck.
