hep c test results and risks for infecting others

I keep hearing different things about hep c tests and risks of transmission to others. Over two years ago I had unprotected sex with a woman who had been treated for hep c with interferon and ribvarin. She told me she was negative for hep c. I was tested for hep c ab a year after this. Test came back as non reactive with signal to cut off at 0.09. Test was done by Quest Diagnostics. Went to doctor a year after and had test and they said there was no evidence of exposure. Is it possible to give someone else a "trace" of hep c with the 0.09 signal to cut off I had? Someone also said that I would always have a trace of hep c and pass it to others. Do signal to cut off ratios ever come back at 0.00?

Emory, please put your mind at ease. You don't have hepatitis C. The test shows that not only you don't have the disease, but you were never even exposed to the virus (which means, the virus never entered your bloodstream). Some people who get exposed to the virus successfully fight it off-and the test shoes this. But in your case, even this didn't happen. I understand that the words "hepatitis C" sound scary,
but there is absolutely no reasons for you to worry. None.

Sexual transmission for hepatitis C is practically impossible. I am basing this on my own experience. My husband has this disease for 27 year, and we only found out 5 years ago-after we were married for a while and had a child. And just like your tests, mine showed that I was never exposed to the virus, though my husband has a substantial viral load. There are many people just like me on this forum.

The only sure way to get this disease is blood to blood. Blood of infected person has to come in contact with the blood of a healthy one. This usually doesn't happen during sex.

You are fine and don't need any more tests.

You had two tests that said no exposure.  If you've heard Hep C is easily transmitted via sex, you are talking to someone who knows nothing about it.  The world is full of those.

You’re result isn’t suggestive of HCV infection. This table from the U.S. CDC discusses HCV antibody results:

http://www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/HCV/LabTesting.htm

It’s very possible you experienced a false positive result, and you were never exposed to begin with.

"woman who had been treated for hep c with interferon and ribvarin. She told me she was negative for hep c"
--------------
Presuming the woman was being truthful, if she was negative for hep c, she would not have been able to infect you as it would mean she's virus-negative, equating to non-infectious.  Furthermore, hepatitis c is NOT a sexually transmitted disease, so even if she WERE positive for hep c, the likelihood of transmission in normal sexual activity is miniscule.  And, your test result confirms no exposure as mentioned above.

I suppose your question may have arisen due to unprotected sex... if so, it would be well-advised to use protection in the future, but more so to protect yourself against STDs that can be transmitted sexually rather than hep c.  Best wishes.
