I took the day off too.

By the time you get there and check in and they put you in a room and run the blood tests and stuff hours go by BEFORE you even get to the biopsy part (which only takes a few minutes).  Then they make you wait at least four hours laying in bed watching tv....

Honestly, I got there at 9am and didn't leave until like 3pm by the time it was all done.

It's much more time consuming than just having a needle put in - theres hours of prep and recovery.

I took a day off from work. The bx was quick and no pain. It was CT guided, They made me stay at the hospital for 4 hours for monitoring and I was warned not to do any lifting or rough work for at least a day. I was ready to mow the lawn when I got home but my wife nixed that idea.

Yes.  The only caveat is I tell patients not to do any heavy lifting or play contact sport for at least 48 hours.  If they get sublimaze or demerol (most of mine do) they obviously can't drive a motor vehicle, operate machinery and the like for 12 hours at least.

hey there... mine wasn't bad at all ('cause they gave me something in a shot.. well, let's just say it was pretty pleasant ha ha !!!)..but I went into work earlier in am and left earlier and had the latest slot available and so didn't have to worry... which some people thought was pretty odd 'cause guess they're generally done early in morn... mine was done about 1:30 p... I think... but geez... it was far better than I expected and prob could have worked... but think it better that you can just take the day off unless you have an office job... I got some lifting and walking... etc.... best to you, and would you let us know how it goes... be well...

I think perhaps no lifting for the day, of course because the liver can bleed. This is why we must lay still for a couple hours after the bx.

I just had my third done  5/21.  The first one 1969, and second 1999, both done on the right side towards the back. Completely painless.  But this last one!!!  Was done with ultra sound in the front, right of center. Thought I had been shot !!! loss my air!!!  Thought my lung was punchured. Went faint, very scary!  But didn't last long. No pain meds needed. Took that day and the next off; but my work is on my feet carrying heavy trays of drinks .

good luck to you. Sorry, hope I didn't scare you much.

My first BX in 1999  was done by my Hep Dr.  I had to have someone pick me up due to hospital requirement but went back to work that afternoon. It was almost painless and very easy.

The second BX 2005 the Hep Dr no longer does BX and now the Radiologist did BX.  Well he botched the job. felt like I was stabbed and I couldn't catch my breath.  They rushed me into xray and said they did not hit the lung but caused the diaphram to go into spasm.  I had to go home with pain medication into my fetal position for about 6 hours so no work that day. My experience is maybe, maybe not.  The second BX I was back to work next day.

Most people post having an easy BX, I just happened to be unlucky the second time.

The procedure doesn't take long but I had to be there at 9:30 for an 11:30 biopsy. Then I had to lay on my side for an an hour and stay for 4 hours post. I was able to go eat and take a flight to see my father that night, but really it was a long day.
Take care,
Bug

Hi- My biopsy wasn't too bad. I had it with no drugs to relax me or kill pain. Afterward I took only Tylenol or Ibuprophen- can't remember, just know it was nothing "good"- lol.  My Dr offered me better stuff, but back then I was very into being completely drug-free so I refused. This time I'll take everything I can get!! But really, it was just a sharp pain like getting punched with something sharp. Afterward felt icky, like my guts were tricking out through the hole in my side- I have a vivid imagination though. I laid on my side for about 4 hours, then drove myself home and resumed taking care of my 2 year old son and doing day care for 2 more kids. So I guess it didn't bother me much. No heavy liftingfor a week or so, I remember the Dr saying that, but of course I picked up my son all the time and nothing happened to me.
Hope all goes well for you- I just wouldn't overdo it too much. If you have a heavy labor job, take at least a day or two off if you can and be sure to clear going back to work with your liver doc. Good luck!

Although retrieving the actual biopsy sample only takes a moment, the procedure itself will generally require several hours to perform. This includes a period of post-op observation to monitor the patient for complications. It would be up to the individual whether they would want to return to work that day; most of us prefer to spend the remainder of the day recuperating. If you have a physically demanding job, your health care provider might order you to refrain from heavy exertion for a day or two. Good luck with your procedure, and more importantly the results.

Take care,

Bill

I wouldn't suggest the day of, but probably the next day. I don't remember any discomfort the following day.
