I was just thinking about how lucky I am to have my son.  He will be 20 in May, and not only does he not "freak out" about getting HCV from me, he (using universal precautions of course) has quite literally cleaned up huge amounts of my blood before now that I'm on warfarin and my blood is so thin.  He dropped out of his freshman year in high school to be my caretaker until I am off of chemo.

Neither he, nor my best friend Valerie even batted an I over caring for me and even having to at times mop up my bodily fluids when I've been so sick, and and I love them both so much for that and especially for never treating me any differently.

ronrons, your mother needs your right there more than ever, and she needs to hold her grandbabies.  I am my best friends godmother to her grandson.  Her entire family knows about my hepc treatment and they DON'T CARE.  They let me hug that precious little boy every time I see him.  I can understand that you didn't understand before, but now that you do, be good to your mother, and most of all, be THERE, she needs her family.

  Yes, JD, well done. Points made without the edge.

My 3 sons still walk in and grab my drink , take a bite of my food and as soon as I got dx'd, they never once worried, cept about me, and I had to DRAG them for their Hep test (I had over 30 yrs., thru all 3 births). All are neg. after years of sharing drinks, food and even the razors when they hit 'shaving' some peach fuzz.Thier friends, daughter in law, who is pregnant. the same way and learned and are very supportive.

I hope 'Ron' will do the same for her mom.

BTW, anyone see the post I posted immediatly after the one above?

I too had hep for years with out knowing. When pregnant with my first child in 83 the HIV
scare hit NZ and OZ. Id done some dodgy things in my wild "live fast die young leave a good looking corpse" youth and I freaked. Tests came up HIV neg but showed hep non A non B
when I asked what that was I got told I must of got hep at some time and my body built a natural immunity against it.Ha ha I thought id gotten away scott free the pheonix from the fire etc .30 years later.......
Any way neither of my children have it or any of my ex lover's 2 of them partners from 10 yr and 6year relationships and certainly no one Ive shared water with has fallen dead so far (o;

Here's some information to help you feel easier about your children and your mom.  Hepatitis C is transmitted through blood-to-blood contact.  Here are some examples of ways it can be passed:

* Sharing a razor - shaving nicks can leave blood on the blade and therefore there is a potential exchange of blood;

* Sharing a toothbrush - bleeding gums can leave blood on the toothbrush, another potential exchange of blood;

* Sharing manicure/pedicure equipment;

* Sharing a straw to snort drugs such as cocaine;

* Sharing needles;

* Rough unprotected sex;

* Cleaning up infected blood without gloves;

* Getting a tatoo or piercing.

This is not an exhaustive list, but I hope it will help you take simple precautions.

Please keep coming to the forum.  Just so you know, we (many of us) are in treatment and are taking drugs that make us temporarily a little crazy from time to time.  If you mom is treating for HCV, she too will experience this.

I'll be on the lookout for your next post.

This is why education is SO IMPORTANT! There are different types of hepatitus!    I can understand the fear of it, but it sure would of been easier to Google it, or read some of the posts that pertain and ask educated questions.
Your fine, your kids are fine,  your Mom is already scared, be a good child to her and show her some empathy!
Good Luck

I have been married for 33 years and have probably had hepc during the entire time.

Even though we were unaware of this for 30 of these years and never took any precautions whatsoever, i did not spread it to my wife or to our two teenage children.

The only part of that post to you was the 1st line. Maybe explain it more in depth? 'Blood in the mouth and it get's into a sore or opening in your mouth', etc.

While I went off on a tangent, I still feel it was 'worded' in a way we are all used to. We ARE a 'room full of heppers' and would someone walk in and say "my my God, I drank after a hepper?" If someone put it to me that way in person, I would answer very similar.

"The bible says u sow what u reap"

The bible says "you reap what you sow". And I sow plenty of good also and firmly believe that, karma and so on but the world here is not always rosy and positive and I don't know a person on Earth that never get's upset, angry or is perfect, 'cept one and He was nailed to a cross. Only one I know that was always 'positive' and is perfect.
There is 'positive' and unrealistic, some times being realistic isn't looked at as positive. Nobody is sweet ALL the time and if they are, their going to need some drugs or therapy soon.

What I said was facts, with an edge of 'sick of this ignorance'. I do apologize for the 'sick of this ignorance' edge. I also suggested she pass this on to her mother. IMO, if your mother had this, would you not be looking for ways to learn, help here? Not just  now looking as "I drank after her'?

The word 'tactfully' was mentioned above, and that is my point.
.................................................................................................

" I apologize in advance for this post, and sure I'll feel bad later.....but this is EXACTLY what we are fighting for ....HEP C AWARENESS! Hopefully now you'll learn and be a supportive friend, but trust me, many of us have lost friends from ignorance."

AND

"With that, (tact) many will help you and give you answers. Despite my frustration coming out in this, if you want to LEARN, we will help you. And  please do pass our site on to your friend. He/she can use our knowledge and support.

AND

Your mom !! Please DO learn on this, ASAP. She needs your support! And is their grandmother.

Personally, egde or not (and apologized for), I'd still say she learned a bit in my post.

God has blessed me much and hope He continues to bless you also.

Ron, even if it was fear - (concern for children's safety), that brought you to this forum, it was a good first step, Continue to lean as much as you can, and maybe (if you can do it tactfully), turn your mom on to this forum! God bless

sfw, u cannot get hep c from drinking after someone..unless they have a bloody mouth and it gets in the drink…………………..

sfw....Re-think that comment!

Ron, I'm going to contain myself, and I am a normally diplomatic, nice, considerate person.
    Your comment is quite ignorant! What we all have to deal with TOO often. You can hug us, kiss us, shake hands, even sit on the same chair we did!  If we sneeze on you , you are not going to die. If you accidentally grab our glass of water, you will.   NOT!
Sorry, but coming to a Hepatitis medical help forum of many that HAVE this disease and are going thru chemo, long, hard., H*LL,  treatments to get 'cured' and have to live with this type of ignorance daily, without reading, researching.... and posting that as you did....is just very inconsiderate. While understanding your concern for your children, perhaps in the future, think before you word things. Would you walk into an HIV clinic and say "OH GOD, don't touch me, kids....don't go near him'. You may want to, but would you SAY it to them? In that way?

Whoever it is that has this (you missed a word up top), is probably aware of the risk. Too be nice I will say, don't let your kids shave with their razor and use her/his toothbrush......both risk still being small. If he/she gets cut and is bleeding everywhere, do be careful and don't let the kids play in it! Even thru sex it is a 3-5% chance and that is currently being questioned. You can however, RESEARCH this disease and still hug your friend, sit by them and shake hands with them and be safe, unless of course you decide to have a transfusion or shoot drugs with them! Or you can choose to treat them as a leper, not go near them again and end a friendship out of ignorance, in which case, he/she doesn't need YOU as a friend. And by the way, MANY people out there have Hep C and don't even know it. They are teachers, and store clerks, accountants and lawyers, bank tellers and roofers, and in every business , race, age and 'class'. We ride motorcycles, drive Lincolns, BMW’s, SUV's and beat up cars. We can be serving your dinner out, or even cooking it! We can be doing your taxes or even taking your blood work at your Dr.'s office. What you truly need to worry about more, is using your in laws razor on a visit that doesn't know they have it yet! Oh and also, the next time you get your nails done all pretty and the tech cuts you, do ask her for the medical records of the lady she cut right before you. Unless you are fortunate enough to have had someone with knowledge tell you, as I am now, to be sure they ALWAYS use sterile equipment, new files, etc. Or if you get a tattoo and they say “oh, we use ’sterile’ equipment”, ask them if they are dipping that ‘sterile’ equipment into a used, open ink container, of which it can be in from a previous customer!
  I apologize in advance for this post, and sure I'll feel bad later.....but this is EXACTLY what we are fighting for ....HEP C AWARENESS! Hopefully now you'll learn and be a supportive friend, but trust me, many of us have lost friends from ignorance.

A suggestion  ….. “ Hi, I have just  found out my “?” has Hep C. As myself and my kids are around him/her often, what are the risk and what precautions should we take”. And even better… “I’d like to learn about this so I can understand it and put my fears at ease to be able to help him/her in this”.
With that, many will help you and give you answers. Despite my frustration coming out in this, if you want to LEARN, we will help you. And  please do pass our site on to your friend. He/she can use our knowledge and support.

  Sincerely,  LL

this is a blood to blood type disease so the probability of your children getting the hep c from "her" is niel! as stated earlier just be aware of things that could cause a blood to blood way that could "possibly" get your children infected with this disease.

support is the best for the "her" in your life and getting educated on hep c will help you as well.

hang in there.  :O)
