i just spent the weekend in the hospital. my HGB was down to 7. i got 3 pints, and they took about 3-4 hours per pint. i had a mild allergic reaction to the first pint, so they had to stop it and i got some tylenol and a shot of benadryl. i got a fever and i felt dizzy and hot. my HGB was up to 10.2 sunday morning and they cut me loose. i felt great. each pint increases your HGB about one unit.
it really wasn't that bad, except for the food. good luck.
had 2 units on monday, took about 2 hours per unit.. night and day difference! i was amazed
They out me in da bed about 6 pm. Started blood bout 8. Private room on acute care floor. Loves that. They take ur BP etc every 30 minutes. So they let me sleep til noon. Went straight to the football field. I'm tellin ya buddy - you're gonna love this!!! I got ready for work this week w/o caffeine! Won't last forever, but it's awesome. Take care tired boy... Karen :)
No time at all in the ER.
Hi Billy,
I know you're a little hesitant about the transfusion (my husband was too before his first), but it's really not as bad as you imagine -- so says my husband, anyway. In his experience, it was closer to 90 or 120 minutes per unit... he had 2 pints twice, and first time was about 4 hours, 2nd time took closer to 3 hours.
If you mean from the time they order it until they actually transfuse you, the first time it was next day, 2nd time it was 48 hours. Hope that helps, and good luck! ~eureka
PS... It helps you feel better SO much faster!
Depends of how much blood you get. One pint of blood usually takes around an hour to transfuse.
