insomnia due to tx , does riba pm dosing affect sleeping, any solutions to sx

by tonybuck, Aug 09, 2006 12:00AM
Hello Team
I am experiencing insomnia and is wondering if riba pm dosing time being to close to bedtime is making matters worse. I am also interested in any solutions you may have done to make insomnia better.

I have only been treating a month, but I have found if I take it around 6:00 with dinner, than I take a 50mg Benadryl around 8:00pm, I can actually sleep through the night with the exception of the piddle runs....every two hours....at least I fall back to sleep.

I started having sleepless nights shortly after starting tx.
Called my nurse, and she tried me on a couple of things. I tried the benadryl, didnt work, then ambien, but that stuff made me feel way weird. We settled on lunesta, and while it works pretty good, I still find that I wake up every couple of hours. But its better than the alternative. Funny isnt it, that you can feel soooo exhausted all the time, yet cant sleep.
Hope you find a rememdy that works for you.

Take your Ribas as early as you possibly can and if you have a split number dose (like 5) take 3 in the am and 2 at night.

I take mine at 7am and 7pm with FOOD (it is crucial you take with food!) so it's about both meal times.

The Riba sure CAN keep you up all night long, in fact is is a VERY common problem unfortunately!

My doctor prescribed Ambien CR - the long lasting sleeping aid. It helps me SO SO SO MUCH.  I was falling apart from lack of sleep (hey we feel bad enough already!) and I asked and he said NO PROBLEM.  Apparently he does write a sleeping script for MOST of his hep patients.

So sorry you are having this problem....but it won't get better on it's own really.  Try to take them as EARLY as possible if you can (always stay on a schedule of every 12 hours) and get a sleeping aid.  That should help.

Well as someone who has already done the 48 wks relapsed and starting a 72 wk tx with peg/riba again, I'll tell you what helped me. I'm a 52 y/o paramedic and dont like any drug I'm not familiar with including anti-depressants and sleep aids, when I started my 48 wk tx I started on good old 10mg valium, and it not only helped me with my riba rage, never was bad but noticed I was a little short with people, my Dr. prescribed it x3 a day. It helped in a lot of ways especially the general anxiety we all have. I cant say it will do the trick for you but I had the same sleepless nights, but not anymore. I just started taking them again when I started re-treatment and its working again for me hope you find what helps you.

I was browsing at my usual flashlight forum last night and saw an interesting post that I want to copy here. It seems that one of the members had been put on an AD and it’s not working for him. All the replies directed him back to his Dr for a med change or additional meds. He said he is on Effexor and one of the other members listed the possible sx’s with that med.

Strangely enough, it looks just like the sx’s from Peg/ Copeg. Anyone else think so?

Anxiety, constipation, delayed orgasm, depression, difficulty breathing, dizziness, dry mouth, itching, loss of appetite, loss of strength, nausea, nervousness, problem urinating, sedation, skin rash, sleepiness/sleeplessness, sweating, tingling hands/feet, tremors, vomiting, unusual dreams, weight loss, or weakness, Abnormal speech, bleeding/irritated gums, chest pain, dry skin, ear pain, hair loss, excessive salivation, migraines, seizures, sensitivity to sun, soft stools, stomach irritation, suicide attempts, taste disorders, tongue discoloring, thyroid changes, or problems with vision.

As others have mentioned, there are serious withdrawal side effects when you stop taking it. Be careful.

I have just started having insomia to the
point of being 'wired' the entire night.
up for two straight night now.
I was getting sick from the pills,
when I took at dinner time,
so I started taking the pills
later in the evening, didn't seem to
affect my sleep at first, but now I am
thinking that must me it...
this is almost to the point of silliness,
no sleep, I thought
I'd be grouchy, nope, so silly it's funny.

My doc never even tried sleep meds. He started me with seroquil, atypical anti-psychotic often used for insomnia but it gave me RLS, so still couldn't sleep. Then tried me on Remeron and even now after I'm done, I'm still using it as sleep seems to be even more difficult. If it's really bad now I'll use a valium with it but only needed to twice. Slowly the drugs will be out of my system, then I work on getting the helper drugs out of my system! Believe me, it's not so hard and it's all been worth it!

Yes, it did with me. I found the later I took the riba the worse the insomnia was.  The doc also gave me Lunesta to help me sleep.

My son takes seroquel for his mental health issues.
wonder if I could just snag one..
kidding I wouldn't do that...
but when I saw that, it floored me..I always thought
of that drug as 'heavy duty' not as a sleep aid..
anyway,

then I saw Mister beagle bailey say his response,
JUMPED UP & TOOK MY RAGE PILLS..
guess I will learn to get use to taking them earlier,
I switched because I thought they were the cause of my sickness
at dinner time.
oh well..
hopefully will sleep tonight somehow

I have only been on riba for 3 weeks but found out quickly it was affecting my sleep. I am taking the riba at 4 PM with a snack. Eat a light dinner at 6PM. Then on an empty stomach at 8PM, take my sleep aids. I know this is bad but last night I had to take three .5mg Zanax and a 12.5mg ambien CR. It was lights out at 9PM and by 11:30 I took the 3rd zanax. Finally must have gone out about midnight. Up at 6:30 to go to work. Every night it is 2 or 3 of the Zanax. I hope I am not screwing myself up doing this but I can not cope without sleep.
