insurance rejected

by salmonid, Dec 14, 2004 12:00AM
I recently had routine lab work in the process of getting a new medical insurance plan.  The result showed elevated liver enzymes and I was not underwritten for the insurance.

The results were:
BILI. TOT. 3.2
AST 55
ALT 190
GGT 166

I'm very stressed about this.  Can I assume Hep. C?  If not, what other factors could cause these abnormal results?

THANKS!

your doctor if you have one, should order more blood work for you. first step is to identify or rule out some of the causes for the elevation, i did not know med ins could deny you, thought they would just raise your rate.
let us know what you find out

I wasn't denied coverage by my existing insurance.  I was trying to change plans and the new plan wouldn't take me...sorry, I wasn't very clear about that.

No you can not assume that you have HCV you need to see your doctor soon. He wiil do some blood tests to see what is going on. I have been told by my liver doctor that the live is a master of disguise, assume any thing. There are alot of things that can cause you liver levels to be up. I am 2 months post TX and my levels are up and my rna count is low <10, so go figure. Hope eveything works out for you, please let us know how things are going.

you can only assume teh possibility of hep c if you have some risks factors that put you in contact with blood or its byproducts. Maybe there is a state clinic that does sliding scale you can use for follow up tests?

Ask why you were rejected. in writing.  Since you have insurance, go aks your doc for a hep screen.  if you have hep c, you will need your insurance, big time.  immediately while you still have that insurance.

And yes, insurance of all types are routinely denied hep c patients.  why do you think they screen for it now?  b/c 4-10 million people in america have hep c and the insurance companies know about the looming health crisis all these untreated cases will cause.

the hep c pandemic will make aids look like chichen feed.

Thanks everyone.

I saw my Dr. this afternoon.  He is doing the Hep C blood screen.  However, he is optimistic in that I have no symptoms and no high risk factors to indicate Hep C.  I should know something more in 48 hours or so.

Again, thanks for the responses.
