HEPATITIS C COMMUNITY
is it safe to adopt a child with Hep C when there are 4 other children in the house

is it safe to adopt a child with Hep C when there are 4 other children in the house

My cousin, who was just sentenced to 6 months in prison, has a 2 year old son. She has asked family for help while she is "away" to take care of her son. Everyone's obvious choice was me because I have 4 children of my own and I am a stay at home mom. My children are 2, 6, 7, and 14. I am glad to help, but my cousin's son was just diagnosed with Hep C. I am wondering if it is smart or safe to have him live with my family. I am concerned that toddlers fall, and they fall often. They scrape their knees, arms, faces, and any other exposed skin. I can say from personal experience that we go thru a box or 2 of bandaides a week here. We mostly go thru so many because the little kids dont keep them on. I am sure this boy is the same way.
Please, any advise anyone has on this would help. It is life changing enough to go from 4 children to 5, even more so when the child is not your's biologically, then to add medical complications on top of that is just way stressful. Help....Please?!?!

Infection within the family is very rare.
Many including myself raised children whilst (unknowingly) having Hep C with no problem.
The disease is infectious rather than contagious. To contract it the uninfected person has to mix blood with one who is carrying the virus..
It's a tough decision for you because although the odds are very small indeed it may be a lingering cause of concern.
Most patients aquired it intravenously either in hospital or fooling with drugs.

Whether the kid has hep-c or not is not the determining factor.  Decide based on other factors.

Very sad statement you made above.
Taking in a child for 6 months and adopting a child are 2 different issues.
