About 1 year after I was diagnosed with cirrhosis (back in 2008) I began to experience lower leg, ankle and foot swelling also known as edema or putting edema. To treat my edema my doctor prescribed Spironolactone. I also take 50 mg. If you are still experiencing edema and it is troublesome you may wish to discuss with your doctor about increasing your dose or maybe a stronger duretic.
I am assuming your edema is due to cirrhosis as you are posting in the hep c community.
Have you been diagnosed with cirrhosis? Do you have hep c? Have you treated your hep c and been cured or are you currently in treatment?
Best of luck to you.
Spironolactone is a diuretic and is prescribed to treat edema which is basically fluid retention - swelling. The real question is - why are you retaining fluid? It could be caused by liver disease, heart disease, kidney disease or other medical conditions. Since you're posting this on the Hep C forum I would guess you have Hep C but I didn't see any statement to that effect. Edema is a common symptom of cirrhosis.
