liquor ??

This may sound a little silly but for the last 2-3 weeks I have been going through tons of Listerine - its helped cut back on the mouth sores bigtime!  Its been a miracle cure for me but I'm worried about the alcohol content...I think its about 24%..I do the swish & spit so its not like I'm drinking it but still I worry.  What do you all think??

If you want to take acidophilus in pill form (all it is natural bacterial cultures in the intestine that meds can deplete big time)....have him take a good probiotic...I think Vitamin Shoppe has a good one and it's not too expensive, you have to make sure there are many types of cultures and the amount counts as well...

If youre intestines get messed up due to not having these natural cultures, some of the results can be a lot of the symptoms youre talking about, even without this tx...you can take a yogurt but in order to get enough of them..(Like Nygirl said) you have to buy the special yogurts, not all of them have much...just my opinion...

Definitely could be thrush because body loses its ability to fight off the fungus during tx.  That would explain mouth and digestive issues. What our bodies normally fight off before tx they can no longer do after we are on tx for a while. Anemia can also cause tongue soreness.  Also, reflux can cause sores, taste problems and other things.  Also, skin is affected by Riba.  Also, more congestion, therefore more bacteria in throat and mouth.  More bacteria in teeth.  All of these can add to one really irritating set of sides.

I am finished tx three weeks and my mouth is still bothering me.  I still have sores, sore throat, sore tongue, funny taste - wait you are supposed to eat all of the used syringes arent you? LOL.  Seriously, I found that I had to be careful of anything with acid, especially tomatoe sauce and pizza sauce, take acidopholus, use Biotene, Orajel, and drinks lots of water.  Even with all that, I still had problems.  Good luck to hubby - give him a big kiss 3 months after he completes tx!

Yogurt - they want you to eat yogurt with LIVE culture inside you have to look for that.  The pharmacy sells pills called Acidophelus (I don't know exactly how to spell it but it sounds like acid-of-elous).  That is a naturl way to get prevent thrush = with antibiotics use anyways.  It's quite a popular thing and easy to find at any pharmacy.

I have these sores (well one right now) on the left side of my tongue that feels like my tongue is ripped open and the pain actually goes up into my ear.  I never had them before I started on tx ever. Of course because they are inside the MOUTH they have so many warm germs...infection is an easy thing.

I tried Scope which didn't work at all for me then I read Biotene in here and looked at it and thought it was just for teeth health and didn't get it. Then I got so desperate I went out and got it and it DID help!

Lots of people have the different digestive problems - runs or constipation.  It's amazing how many different things his body can go through but when you think about it...poison is being pumped in there and the body really DOES have to be miraculous to handle it!

Don't worry about doctors saying "specialist" at ALL.  It just means he is saying "I don't know the answer"...

Specialists are GREAT because you know you are getting the real deal...the BEST advice that $$$ can by!  PErsonally I'd like to have a specialist for EVERYTHING now! I've found that just knowing that they are an expert gives me such confidence...knowing they have a great base of knowledge to draw from an that they WILL help me  - makes me feel SAFE.

You are a great wife, your husband is so lucky to have you.  Really.  I wish I had a spouse like you (well a male version anyway LOL).  I hope he knows it.

Anytime you need help you just holler.  I just rambled so much that I don't know if I answered your question but I want you to feel CONFIDANT.  There are solutions to most of our problems in here...and the doctors have NOT lived through it so they really don't KNOW what will help...but the people in here - they sure DO!

Best of luck to you both,
Debby

When you say mouth sores, are you just talking about the gums or the tongue too? Hubby has a terrible sore on his tongue. Doc wants to send him to a specialist. That is kind of scary to me. The be-in-charge nurse said he should eat yogurt.
Sorry about this question, he has also been experiencing quite a bit of the runs. I don't remember hearing about that as a side. Has anyone else experienced this. The be-in-charge nurse suggested potatoes for that.
We are waiting for his 12 week results now.

Ask your doctor or dentist for "Magic Mouthwash", they should know what you're talking about.  It seems like the best thing for dealing with the mouth sores/problems that are caused by "thrush"!  Even better than the biotene.  Seems like youir pharmacist has to mix it up!

I hate the mouth sores yuck.  YUCKKKKKK.  God they hurt!

I just wanted to chime in so I felt like part of the gross mouth group LOL.  I used Scope and it did nothing to help them really.

Biotene is the viable way to go I mean I don't believe that amount of alcohol could do anything (since hopefully you aren't drinking the Listerine LOL) but who knows.

NO ALCOHOL of any kind!
Not even in food even if its cooked in it.
Not even if its organic in herbs...
NOTHING

BIOTENE, BIOTENE, BIOTENE! The active enzymes help fight germs and rid mouth sores. I buy the toothpaste and gum...HUGE HELP.

I'm just wondering if you've ever tried Biotene? it doesn't have alcohol...I love it cause it makes my mouth really watery...if that makes any sense...

What do I know about this anyway? all I know is my doc told me to try and stay away from anything alcoholic, including mouthwashes with a lot of alcohol like Listerine, though prob a remote chance of actual harm to a liver compromised person, I don't know for sure and I'm not sure if the experts know either...

Also the gums are little protection for the blood stream...even when you put things on the skin it hits the bloodstream...so he told me about Biotene and so did my dentist...I literally brush my teeth 6 or 7 times a day because I brush after every meal and that's how often I eat because of my hypoglycemia...so that's a lot of mouthwashing I do...always like having fresh breath though!!

My concern would be more dry mouth then anything, and most meds will give you dry mouth, and I've heard that tx certainly does...

Alcohol is a drying agent, my dentist said most people should try to use non-alcoholic mouthwashes and toothpaste because dry mouth is not good for the teeth, it promostes tooth decay...and products like Biotene make you salivate...(George Clooney does the same thing for me but that's another matter, he he)

I also make sure I don't have alcohol in my body moisturizers for the same reason, I don't want dryness....which is a neat trick cause most of them do...

But like I said, I'm no  expert, I guess I got the same spiel that Snook did from his doc...

I will say once I had asmall infection in my gums and my dentist dx'ed a medicated mouthwash with a little alcohol in it, but that isn't the one I would use all the time, just for special occasions like that...

My understanding on the alcohol issue on tx is that it can place a negative drag on the immune system. I was advised to stay away even from the occaisional non-alcoholic beer for that reason - albeit a very remote chance that it would hurt anything.

I have no knowledge of Listerine -- I did use a rx mouthwash that had some alcohol. Sometimes it's a question of tradeoffs, I mean it's not like your just like washing down fish tacos with it (as was my interest in the fake beer), yur using it to help get you through the tx.

I was told specifically NOT to use Listerine, as the alcohol is absorbed and processed by the liver...I used Biotene, just as Foresee mentioned above.. Great stuff, and keeps the sores away. I never got any during tx, but I gargled with the stuff nearly 3 times a day, and also with a warm saltwater solution with lime juice just for added piece of mind..
