memory and blueberrys

anyone have memory problems? mine is so bad, i took my welbutrin, and 3 seconds later, i couldnt remember if i took it. i had to count all the pills to make sure. i think its maybe from all those years of smokin like cheech and chong, lol. i havent started treatment yet, so i cant blame that. i seen a segment on the news the other day that said blueberrys are very ggod for the memory. i think i will stock up on that and some fish, wich suppose to be good for the memory as well, i forget, lol. well, i hope everyone is doin well.

I haven't started tx. yet either, but I also have memory problems. I assume mine are from ammonia that builds in the brain during liver failure. Mine was real good when my ammonia level was back to normal, but is getting worse again. I will see Dr. for the first time in 6 mos., in Sept. Have Your Drs. checked your blood work for ammonia level? If you don't know ask because I'm pretty sure some damage can be permanent.    Good Luck w/ tx., Joni

Hello Bill - I found the information about blueberries below at this URL: http://www.naturalhealth1.com/nutrition/55?page=2

There were also many other foods on this site that were suggested for various reasons.  But like anything else you would put in your mouth, before eating anything just make sure they are liver friendly - I noticed on one site that blueberries contained Iron...not sure if it was a level to be concerned about - but since I didn't find this on a hepc or liver specific site - some of the items might not be good for the liver - so just make sure before you eat!

Blueberries
Despite their small size, blueberries are one of the most potent antidotes to oxidative stress, a process that ages you. The red pigments, or anthocyanins, in blueberries appear to be responsible, according to a study released last year by Tufts University in Medford, Mass.

Blueberries help your brain maintain its ability to produce dopamine, a chemical that is crucial for memory, coordination, and feelings of well-being, but that declines as you age, says physician Khalsa. Recently Tufts researchers found that feeding aged rats the equivalent of 1/2 cup blueberries daily actually reversed declining memory and poor coordination.

Researchers also recently found that blueberries prevented the growth of breast cancer cells in test tubes.

I am not sure if it matters...I didn't find an article that specifically named a particular type of blueberry that was better than any other.

Anyone on tx will benefit from anti-oxidants, whether in food or in supplements.  They protect cells from damage.  Some vitamins help build and sustain red blood cells; Vit.b-12, Vit.C for example.  Folic acid is good for the blood and the nervous system.  Vit.E is great; it can be taken internally, and the oil applied externally on trouble spots on your skin (dry,  cracked, scaly... even in mouth or around eyes).  Calcium is always good, and may even help your hair or nails.  I can't think of all the reasons...  but iron is the only thing you don't want to take extra of unless the doc tells you to.  So a multivitamin with minerals (senior formulas and some men's formulas don't have iron) and these other vits. and minerals are good for you during tx.  Besides, if you have a weird apetite during tx, you'll feel less guilty.
But, as my mother-in-law, a professor of Nutrition at Penn.State taught me: it's always best to have a varied diet, with no one thing dominating.  Maj Neni

yup - couldn't live without my pill box. Not only does it allow me to keep track of my meds but, when in trouble, it helps answer that nagging doubt : is this still today or is it tomorrow?
