Hi Susie,

First, while it’s not recommended to share personal care items such as toothbrushes or nail clippers with someone that is infected with HCV, it’s important to remember this is a very poor method of transmission.

Secondly, if your daughter has HCV antibodies only, and not active, HCV RNA, then she cannot infect you; in fact, she doesn’t carry the virus at all, if that’s the case. Antibodies themselves are not contagious, nor do they present a health issue for your daughter.

Regardless of all this, universal precautions are always in order; treat other’s blood and body fluids as if they are all infected, and take appropriate precautions at all times just to be safe.

Antibodies are not really the problem. Does she actually have the virus? That would show up in her PCR test or viral load test. If she bled from the gums and there was blood left on her toothbrush and you cut your gums with her toothbrush there is a chance that the virus can be transmitted that way. I doubt there is a big chance. If you are concerned you should get tested to put your mind at ease.

What do you mean, accidentally or something?  Is your daughter HepC positive or are you?  I'm a bit confused why you would share toothbrushes in the first place.
