I wasn't online much for a couple of days, so I just read your initial post. I'm struck by how identically it mirrors exactly how I felt that first week or 10 days. I'm also on my third tx, and I thought I was prepared but was shocked by how much harder this triple tx is. The nausea hit md unbelievably hard too, so that I was putting everything I had into the effort to keep the pills down. I'd already been told that many of the anti-nausea pills interacted badly with Incivek, so I tried to tough it out for a few days until I realized I needed rescue or I was going to fail at keeping up with my tx. I phoned my liver clinic and and was started on Zofran that same day. What a life-saver! In 30 min. I went from feeling ready to vomit, to being hungry! The tx is still hard but it is much more doable now.

I tried everything for the nausea, I would take my pills and eat something fat then hold my hand over my mouth for about 45 minutes to make sure it stayed down. I finally got some of the zofran as well but the pills didn't work too well and finally my primary doc had it made into a cream to rub in my skin and wow that worked much better. I would also take a swig of pepto bismal and that would help. I did have to force myself to eat and that was hard at 6 am and 10 pm. And yes everything smelled toxic to me even the laundry soap ick. Like Bee said above it does help to stagger your meds like a half hour apart I did the same thing. Good advice from everyone you will just have to check all of them out. good luck...anne

Thank you very much,
today I drank my first ginger tea and its seems to help a bit.
the nausea stays even during the night so I can sleep no more than 2 or 3 ours.
well till I have my meeting with the doc I'll try with the ginger and will ask tomorrow for zofran.
regards marc

I love Switzerland :)
I agree with the advice here.  Anything ginger should help.  Zofran has worked wonders for me.  But here are some tips my tx nurse suggested:

Make sure to have a good breakfast -- reason being -- we fast all night when we sleep, so if the first thing you put in your tummy is a med, it's gonna make you sick.  You can also have ice cream for breakfast if you like.

Try taking the different meds (RIBA and INC) at least 30 minutes apart, instead of at the same time; this gives your system time to process the meds separately.  Plenty of people take them at the same time and are fine, but if you're not, it's something to consider.

Drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

Have something a little greasy (only if that's ok with your doc).
Feel better.

I had the smell to, I walked around for 12 wks sniffing myself and asking those close to me if they could smell it to, either it was just me or they were being nice but knowing the one's close to me they would have told me. It went away for me once I finished the incivek.

I used ginger candy during tx, but have used zofran in the past for extreme nausea. The zofran worked very well. I used it when I was nauseous rather then before I might be nauseous.

These ginger candies weren't as extreme as the crystalized ginger and worked well for the nausea I experienced during tx.

I started out with just a slight amount of nausea but it got a lot worse and finally I was barely able to eat anything except Greek yogurt and eggnog, nothing real solid. When I started vomiting I asked for some Zofran. I should have asked weeks and weeks before. Zofran prevents the nausea that comes with chemo. My guess is that the nausea is from the interferon but perhaps also from the other drugs. Zofran works well to prevent thuis type of chemically induced nausea. Within a very short time of starting Zofran, I was back to eating real solid food again instead of just lying around feeling nauaseated, bloated, and ready to puke and ready to pass out. I am taking 8 mg of Zofran every eight hours. I take it about an hour before I plan to eat my high fat meal. Zofran is not an as needed medication. You take Zofran on schedule because you want to prevent the nausea before it gets started.

Hope that helps.

If i was you i sure would be hoping he doesn't dose reduce in your first week, but instead treats the problem, there are simple things to try first, ginger comes to mind. Next there are meds to fight the nausea that works great... My doctor rx me Phenergan.

Good luck
