need referral for hepatologist experienced in autoimmune hepatitis

My wife's liver functions (ALT, AST) increased significantly after starting Fosamax for osteoporosis. Although they have returned to almost normal after stopping Fosamax, her ANA level has begun to increase. After ruling out Hep A, B, and C, her gastroenterologist diagnosed autoimmune hepatitis, and wants to start prednisone. Since this would be bad for osteoporosis, we would appreciate your recommendation of a hepatologist in the Philadelphia area who is experienced in autoimmune hepatitis, for a second opinion. Your help in this matter will be appreciated greatly.

Dear Donald Nestler:
I am sorry to hear about your wife’s situation though autoimmune hepatitis is usually a very treatable condition.  As it turns out, I have spent a fair amount of my career in Philadelphia and I know the Hepatology community there quite well.  I can recommend Dr. Michael Lucey and Fred Nunes at the University of Pennsylvania without hesitation.  Santiago Munoz at Albert Einstein is another outstanding Hepatologist.  Martin Black is an excellent hepatologist at Temple University.
Good luck.  Feel free to let me know if you have additional questions or information.  You can always contact us directly at Henry Ford at (313) 916-8865.  This response is being provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered medical advice or consultation.  Always check with your personal physician when you have a question pertaining to your health.
