new diagnosis of hep C

My girlfriend just found out she's hep C positive when donating blood for autologous donation for a surgery.  At first  I've been in denial knowing that false positives can occur.  However we just called a doctor who performed blood work a year ago and hepatitis C was confirmed.  The physician feld to inform us. At this poing I don't know what the labs say because we only spoke with the receptionist.  I'm feeling really down because weve been going through alot of other medical issues as well. We don't know if it is active or not. Next week she's scheduled for neurosurgery.  We only found out last night and today should we be concerned going into surgury not knowing the stage of hep C?  Any support would be appreciated.  feeling helpless.  I don't know if I have it.  Don't know how to comfort her. afraid of losing my job. I'm in the medical field

Be supportive it's important smile. Help the confused lend a sholder. Yeah Yeah! Being hep c positive has opened my eyes. From being denied disability for 45 days without even knowing my name is a start, and constant hassel there after helps the mental state. My wife thinks I'm faking, mad all the time for loss of income, no intimacy for a looooooong time, for the first time in my life my veheicals are paid off including a new Harley, which I will have to sell I already hocked half of my truck, missed a deal of a life time on a refinance that would have been comfortable. I admire you all for coping, but it's not me. We only go around once and as I age the clock speeds up, Good luck to you all, I'm going out loud.

she was mad I hadn't informed her prior to sex even after explaned she cant get that way!!! dumb broad!!! women!!!!!

Excuse me.....? If I weren't married and was having a sex life outside of marriage, I WOULD want to know if my partner had hep c!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable that people don't give their partners the chance to decide for themselves if it is risky for them. I wouldn't chance unprotected sex outside of marriage unless I was in the relationship mono! And only after some time of knowing this person.

She wasn't a dumb broad and you should be slapped for putting her into a situation like that!!!!!MEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 4-week test thread (2 below) is already full.  That was quick.  So I hope you do get your 4-week results today and the CBC.  I also read whatever thread it was on that you are getting a lot of joint pains all the sudden.  Does shell fish have anything to do with that?  Have you had any?  I don't think you are getting anemia but when you get those results today we will have a better idea.  I think the joint pain is a common reaction to the interferon, but what I was reading said it mostly levels out about 4 weeks, and your pains didn't start til 6 with you. Wish I knew.

I was checking one sight on sides (www.hcvadvocate.org ) and they suggest for excercise for joint pain e - one of the suggested activites is "Hula- hooping."  So my suggestion is for you to get after it.!

On the ongoing saga of my 12 week PCR - I finally called the GI's office today and asked them to call the lab and put a trace on it (it has been 15 days).  She says she can no longer get thru to the local office and gets the Indiana office.  They tell her she must call another lab.  Three calls to different LabCorp numbers, and they finally say the lab, done on the 6th arrived at some lab on the 11th and MAY BE done on the 25th.  I sure hope the results are worth waiting for.

A fisherman returned to shore with a giant marlin that was bigger and heavier than he. On the way to the cleaning shed, he ran into a second fisherman who had a stringer with a dozen baby minnows. The second fisherman looked at the marlin, turned to the first fisherman and said, " Only caught one, eh?"

You are in the right place.  The people here are the most supportive people I've EVER met.  They have patience of SAINTS and never mind answering questions.

When I came here I had SO MANY questions that I was driving everyone BATTY I was sure...but they just kept calming me down and answering whatever I needed to know BETTER than my doctor.  Of course they are NOT doctors but...if you ask me they explain things in real life terms from EXPERIENCE and that is what I want to know more than anything.

Best of luck with your whole situation.  I've never heard of anybody who got it from sexual transmission but you do know there are certain RULES you should follow from now on (no rough type sex, no unprotected anal sex, no unprotected sex during her period) etc. that will make sure you stay healthy.

Wishing you all the best,
Debby

Hello,
Maybe I missed someone else saying this already but, I have been married for almost 12 years and have had this around 16 years. Hubby is negative. Real hard to transfer during sex. Underline hard!

Best luck and keep coming back. I think it is really great that you are checking into all this too!

God Bless,
Dana

one thing I forgot to say, when I was first diagnosed I was soooo freaked out that when I did go to the boards, as you are now, I scared myself even more because I was sure that any horror story that anyone was going through was surely going to apply to me. Please dont do the same thing, everyone is different with this disease, different backgrounds, etc. Sometiems people might be very bad off because they had a bad lifestyle up until diagnosis, sometimes not, point is you have to just take in what you need to know, and then have the docs treat your girlfriend's individual case.

As was said, she might not be that bad off at all. And if she does decide to do treatment, all the stories vary on that too, in terms of what happens to you. Just spoke to a friend today and she's in her 4th week and she's had almost no sides at all, she feels great. One thing we might all agree on is that the worrying is usually the worst part of this disease, try to keep some joy and a sense of humor, it'll help a lot till you both adjust to the new circumstances. One thing I have to mention though perhaps I shouldn't...it's nice to see a guy who is asking about his girlfriend with hep c, it's usually the other way around. Kudos to you.

My sister has cirrhosis, 3rd stage, so she was refused anisthesia (have no idea how to spell that word and I'm too lazy to look it up)because of some concern her liver couldn't take it, process the meds so to speak, for a nose job she got. So she did a local, ouch!!! (She said it was no big whup.) Anything for beauty in this town!!!!But she is in third stage cirrhosis. Your girlfriend would probably test out in her labs and/or have symptoms of this if this was the case, which I'm pretty sure it isn't, or they wouldn't want to do surgery on her.

You'll hear over and over how completely freaked out people get when they first get diagnosed, but you have to believe this is a very "individual" disease in terms of how it effects us. Firstly, her being a woman is a good thing in terms of this disease. It's all over the map, many, many people have this for over 25 years and are pretty much unscathed by it. I also think this has a lot to do with our own identity issues. We go on thinking we are perfectly healthy people of this society, and then someone tells us we have a chronic disease that could possibly be life threatening. One big mind ****!!!!Makes us feel like we are one of those kids with cooties that hung out by themselves by the jungle bars...until we get our mind straight about it.

But really, just get educated, someone said to go to janis, that's a good start. I am a big surveyor of this, meaning I go to many hep c boards and have talked to countless people on the net and in live support groups, and in all my experience, which is pretty vast by now, I have never, ever once spoken to one person who thought they had gotten this sexually. It's not like HIV. Now I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I think it's safe to say it's fairly rare. Hope this helps and good luck. You have found a nice place here.

When I was told I may have hep c I worried and got real down. When it was confirmed I tried to ignore it for a year, occasionally looking things up on the web and getting more confused. Once I dove in and started talking to others with hep c, like you are here, things improved. It seemed a little less overwhelming as I finally went through the next little step, like the biopsy, etc. Emotionally I feel way better now that I'm finally on treatment then when I was getting swallowed by the fear and lack of knowledge about this disease. I wish good thoughts for you both, just put one foot in front of the other.

Why would you lose your job?  My sister is hep c positive and is a RN?  I am sorry about your friend.  The good news is that most of us do really well with hep C.  I have had this for 30 years and am very healthy.  The downside is this treatment sucks.  I remember being devistated about having Hep c for about 5 years.  Then one day the light balb went on and I realized that this illness is not that bad at all ( in my case).  Now this treatment I am on sucks.  good luck to you.

It is unbelievable that this physician failed to inform her of her hep c diagnosis, how incompetent!
Hep c it's a slow moving disease in most people as far as the liver is concerned but what if she was in advance liver damage then and the year wait made it worse? It is amazing! Even though we work in the medical field, we are not aware of the risk of transmission in situations other than blood transfusions or IV drug use. Sexual contact transmission risk is very low, less than 5% in some studies, so I would not worry terribly, but do get tested for the peace of mind.
After her surgery, she should get a PCR test done to see her viral load, and then a biopsy to see about liver damage. Only then do you have the full picture and can make decissions.
The dx is devastating and it will take a while to feel at ease with it, do a little research so that you can comfort her and assist her.
janis7hepc.com is a good site to start.
take care or yourself and her

I can not answer your medical questions, but I can tell you this.  When I first found out I had HCV, I was extremely down and even depressed.  Once you learn more about the virus as a whole, the stigma some have outweighs the reality.

Its not so bad.  You just have to find out your specific situation and the good news is that if you needed to treat the virus, treatment is avaiable.

Hang in there.
