new medication?

Is it really true the new meds that are comeing out is a shorter treatment than the 48 weeks us geno type 1a have to do? I was reading a web site someone posted on the study but I was unable to see the part were they said people have cleared Hep C or the percent was higher . I am at 33 weeks and have decided I can not take the treatment anymore due to the sides. I am going to test on Monday so the results will be at the doctors office at my appointment. But I am expecting sooner or later it will be back. the first 6 months I was ok but the last two have been Hell! I was a stage 1 when I started so hopfully my liver has healed a little. If the new meds are a shorter course of treatment why are we on this other stuff? and no sides from it Wow. I bet the hair will still go though hahahah!

I know how hard it is to continue, but pls dont give up, I almost gave up at week 27, but I continued with the help & support of all the good people here, just think of it as a fight, one that you are going to win, nothing more, nothing less, just a victory....

Good Luck My Friend

just go and google vx 950. this seems to be the drug in the lead and most promising as of now. it is at trial stage 3 currently out of 4 stage trials. all the people on it cleared by about 8 days which does't mean you can stop at day 8)that is fantastic.
it may be used with peg intron or alone that has yet to be determined but there is no side affect like with riba and if it reduces viral loads so drastically in all tested on it sure looks like a much shorter treatment time. my dr. hopes 2-3 years as it is being FAST TRACKED  by the drug admin.
to be realistic it could fall through totally but it looks great. this is a very personal decision. read all you can and take notice of the dates the artical was written so you know if it is the latist. i am a stage 3.3 so i do not have the option. i hope your sides decrease as mine are always up and down.
with a stage 1 you have that option.
i did not know peg could reduce damage from a stage 2 to a 0. that is encouraging.
were you undectable at week 12?
if i were a stage 1 my dr. would not even let me in the office he is so optimistic.
again it is your call only.
lol

You are almost 70% done now and you are on the down hill side.  A few things about the new meds: there is no specific date when they will be available to the public, I have a concern as to how/if my insurance would cover the new stuff.  By the time the new meds come out, if you stick it out, hcv could be a distant memory to you.  It doesn't seem like you have much damage, and possibly you have had some repair over the 33 weeks.  If you are detectable in the next pcr, or if you were detectable since week 12 I'd consider stopping.  But look at the time you already have invested. And, since the meds are still in trials - they could find something that could delay them.  Tough decision. Does the doc have an opinion?

Oh please hang on if in any way you can you are almost there!  There is no guarantee that ANY of the new drugs wil REALLY work...we all pray so hard that they will but...nobody knows and lots have appeared like they were going to in the past and did not pan out.

You are so close. You CAN do this. I know how hard it is but...we all have to hang in there and support each other during the hard times or none of us in here will make it.

Darn for those lucky people who ARENT in here and have no problems....but thank GOD for those of us who do we found each other.

My doctor said the same thing if I could just finish 36 weeks it would be better. but right now that seems like a eternity! with all the stress of the meds my mom has a stage three brest cancer and is going for her masectomy next week and my Dad just had a quad bypass on his heart 3 days ago ontop of all that and the meds I feel like I cant take it anymore to much on my plate right now.not to say I work 50 hours a week doing massage facials and run my shop a mother of two teenagers by my self its just to much. I need some relief and some more Riba and a shot is not going to get it for me right now. Im the one that need a massage!!!!!

the main thing that im going through is the fatique. im completly irritated 24 hours a day. no sleep about 4 to 5 hours a night with one eye open. my head itches like crazy nothing makes it feel better it always returns and im almost bald the right half of my head gos numb to. I started of with very fine hair every day it feels like its just going to fall off my head. I had to quit the gym 2 weeks ago because every little thing was making me fatique more and i need all my energy for work so i had to. I also get crazy sciatic pain all through my right leg.

A couple of things to consider.
1.  The less damage you have to your liver, the more likely the treatment is to work.  Your odds are excellent.
2.  You don't mention viral load but if your starting load was low, that's also in your favor.  In fact, some recent studies (see postings by TriHepGuy) suggest that low viral load and EVR might mean that a shorter duration of treatment will work for 1a (24 weeks I think).
3.  Were you undetectable at 4 weeks?

I'm not advocating the shorter duration idea (the research is new) but if you're good on the 3 points above, your odds are a lot better than most when it comes to SVR.

my starting viral load was 50,000 and my doctor onlytested at 3 months and was undetected.

the new meds might be out in about 5 years, there is no data on SVR yet on any of the subjects, only rapid viral clearance. We don't know if anyone is cured yet and won't know for a while. The new meds might not be a monotherapy,  meaning that if interferon is added to combo and you had a reaction to it, you are not going to be better of. As someone said, HCV might be a distant memory by the time these new meds are available to all.

try to get a GOOD pain med and if you are anemic, epogen as an alternative to quitting altogether might be an option your dr will consider. If the side effects are controlled, then we are mostly left with the length and exhaustion from it. Coming here for support and daily reassurance or just whine can get you to the end. what are the main specific symptoms that are making you miserable?

Don't quit your treatment now.  You are nearly finished.

Yes, there are other drugs in the pipe but I don't see any of them going on the market for a couple of more years.  I'm in an NM283 trial and I have cleared the virus but there are still safety issues that need to be addressed.

Not sure where you are getting that five years from cuteus.  Nothing in guaranteed but if all goes well Vertex are looking at 2-3 with VX 950.

I'm so sorry for all your side effects.

I hate taking drugs but some drugs can actually make you feel better rather than worse!

An anti-anxiety drug could help with anxiety and sleep.  Even the stronger Ambien wouldn't let me sleep.  I'm now taking Clonazipam--an anti anxiety drug.  I take it at night and I can sleep through anything now.

Provigil is a drug for fatigue/brain fog.  I just started taking it and it's really helped me get my work done.
