have take iron or vitamin , during tx?i will follow the direct of my doc, like everybody else, but i m just curios to know .

Not I. They said not to take any vitamins or supplements without he king with the doctor first. I believe iron is a BIG no, no with HCV as it encourages he virus to have babies.

I did not take it. I was advised by one of the top hepatologist in the world to take a vitamin WITHOUT iron. He said why take a chance of helping the drug replicate. My hgb dropped to under 10 at 13 weeks and my riba was reduced. Iron was never considered an option.

I took a multi-vitamin that had NO iron (Centrum Silver) which was okay'd by my doctor.

vitamins amino acids and minerals are essential to everyday overall health - if you have high iron dont take iron - if you have low iron take the ones with iron - be sure to monitor levels - iron does not directly aid viral production - too much iron has a deleterious effect on the immune system - this allows faster replication

I do not understand why your doctor would want you to take iron.

First of all, your hemoglobin is 14.

Second, even if your hgb was to drop below 10, the anemia caused by tx is NOT due to iron deficiency. So this would be pointless.

Third, iron levels usually go up during tx and you would not want to add to that by taking more iron.


I was kind of an exception to this, as my iron levels were below normal and my hgb was low BEFORE tx, my doc put me on iron pills BEFORE treatment and advised me to finish them, even though I had started treatment. Then she told me to STOP them.

What kind of doctor are you going to? Make sure he has treated a lot of people for Hep C before taking his advice. Just because a person is called a doctor... doesn't mean they know anything about this virus or what our treatment does to us.
