oral medications for fungal infections

by miljoy, Apr 21, 2005 12:00AM
I have had Hep C for 27 years now. I have been suffering with fungal infection of the toe and finger nails now for a year and a half, only using topical creams or nail laquer because I was told I could not take Lamisil due to how it would affect my liver. These are not effective solutions for me. Are people like myself just supposed to live with it? Are there medications being developed for those of us who can't take the same meds that those who don't suffer from hep c take? And if not,why not?
Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon!

Yep, know the fungal toenail problem really well. All through summer I had to hide it under a bandaid. I use Loceryl varnish to try and keep it under control, everytime I just get it cleared and a bit of new nail growth my neutrafils(?) drop and back it comes again. Anyway have finsihed treatment 2 days ago and going on a South pacific cruise in 6 months so am hoping strongly to get my good toe nail back by then!

This is so weird....What is up with Hep C and nail fungus?  Seems like all of us have some kind of nail fungus or had at least???  I had mine last year on my toe before starting tx. I think I may have posted this before but vicks vapor rub did the trick for me,  I had tried for years with other things and it did not get rid. I hated it because if wearing sandals,,,always had to paint my toenails.  So nightly would coat it with vicks before going to bed.  Did that for a month or so and it will clear.  Another remedy is dip your toenail or fingernail in listerine mouth wash.  Makes sense,,,kills bacteria.

thank goodness you found out not to take it before you did...my dr prescribed it and i took it and i didn't know i had hepc so now i'm not sure if i would be as advanced in liver damage had i not taken it...please it's not worth it...

why don't you treat for the hep c instead...the toe nail issue isn't that serious if ya know what i mean...but perhaps you have already tried tx???

To: miljoy, all
I'm glad you brought this issue up. When I was first diagnosed, I asked my primary care doc if there were any dietary constraints or meds to avoid, and his reply was " stay away from alchohol, and by no means take any anti-fungal meds". Personally, I never would have considered using Lamisil, but somehow those words stuck in my mind. Apparently, it's nasty stuff re: hepatic toxicity. Treat for your liver first, you'll have time for cosmetics down the road.
Best to you,
Bill

I have actually developed a toe nail fungal infection since starting tx. and I am not doing anything for it.  My doctor also told me to avoid anti-fungals.  I have had a skin condition since my teens, called tinea versicolor (sun spots) which is a fungal infection and I used to treat it for years, first with a selson application and then for the past 8 years with Nizoral.  Nizoral is a major no no if you have liver issues, and I have just put in a request for referral to my dermatologist to see how to address both the toe thing and the sun spots.

Someone told me once that some fungal infections thrive on cocoa products.  Also, I think there is a definite connection between the Candida Syndrome (yeast) and other fungal issues.  Not to mention too much candida can cause acne, allergies, anxiety, ashtma, IBS, fatigue, headaches, lost sex drive, poor memory, muscle weakness, persisent coughs, PMS, etc.

A healthy diet is so important.

I also read that white distilled vinegar applied in the AM and PM would work.  The fungus can't tolerate the acidity of the vinegar, so they say.  I've been using the vinegar tx for a couple months now and my nail looks better, but I can't prove it worked yet.  It takes months and months of persistent care to get rid of it.  I also use Honey's Vick's treatment from time to time.

I don't suffer with the fungus thing but a friend of mine did. After using meds (not sure which) for over a year with no improvement, she was told by another friend to dip her toe in bleach water. She tried it and for her it worked very well. I think she used a 1/4 water with 3/4 bleach solution daily for a couple of months. Hope you all get rid of it whatever method you try.

My son had this condition and we tried Tea Tree Oil...morning and night.  It smells alittle wierd but it seemed to work.

Thank you all for your quick comments on the nail fungus. I will try the Vicks, Vinegar,Tea Tree Oil and Loceryl Varnish.
