pegasys and rib costs?

by orphanedhawk, Oct 09, 2006 12:00AM
It looks like I'm going to be paying for treatment (no insurance and too much $ in the bank). Does anyone have any idea of the best place to buy pegasys and ribvarin and if the costs differ much from one pharmacy to another or?

Back around 2001 it cost 150.00 dollars for a box of PegIntron. Ribaviron in those days was 9 bucks a pop and I had to take 6 per day. At that time, ribaviron was not allowed to be unbundled without Peg, and the only way people could get it other than with Peg was from a pharmacy in Pennsylvania called Fishers, I think. What they did was buy a large amount of raw powdered ribaviron and encapsulate it themselves. It was cheaper but you had to make sure your doctor would go for this "off label" type of prescription. This is old news and I am not sure about todays prices. It would be interesting to know.

Please be sure and check with the patient assistance programs the drug companies offer. They are NOT the same type of qualification standards you normally see from places like the state or other programs that are based on being at or below the poverty level, they do qualify people in the "middle class." You can have money in the bank, you can own property, you can make a decent living. It's worth applying for. I dont have the number for Pegassist but they have a website that has the number to call. Sorry, I keep meaning to have that handy. They are the makers of Pegasys. Commitment to Care is the program from the makers of PegIntron their number is 800 521 7157.

Roache doesn't care how much money you have in the bank. What they want to know is your income. They are also flexible. Forget the $150 a week for a box of Peg. LOL. Maybe someone can give you a breakdown but it can go as high as $100,000 a year to treat, especially if you need some of the rescue drugs like Procrit. Possibly higher. Best check out all the prices yourself and don't take anyone's word.

All the best.

Hey thanks. I don't have a high income, in fact I think its considered really low. Its just my CD's that had me worried. Even if they just give me a break, that'd help for sure. I will get in touch with Roche.

FYI- In the state of florida the ceiling for income is $68,000. I have no insurance and use schering-ploughs Commitment to Care which rocks, like kalio mentioned above. FREE meds delivered to your door. They ONLY base it on your income not your possessions. Good luck. We've got other links for "rescue drugs" like procrit and neupogen. Same type of program as Roche and schering. based only on income. ...again, good luck!

I wanted to add that the income level is the after tax amount so your income can be even higher. I was told their income levels vary by geography also. Well worth the effort of applying.
