Different doctors seem to have very different protocols and thresholds for platelet count.
I treated after my liver transplant and my platelets got down to the low 20,000s - I think 23,000 was the lowest. I treated for quite some time in that range and my transplant surgeon never said a word about it. Perhaps he was used to seeing platelets that low - there can be some bone marrow suppression post transplant. I seem to recall that he ordered labs for my clotting time frequently but I don't have them on hand. I am guessing that maybe my clotting time wasn't as bad as my low platelet count suggested.
Good luck,
Mike
yes. i do now i called my insurance comp. neapogen . procrit
Your next PCR should reassure you. I cleared early but also dropped to very low everything at 9 weeks. Meds have been stopped once and reduced interferon (but not riba because I had access to Procrit) for much of treatment. I remained undetectable. Try not to worry. They won't stop you, but without the rescue meds you will be on reduced meds. Can you get the rescue meds like Procrit for hgb production and Neulasta or neupogen for neutrophil production?
My platelets were only 56 at the start of tx. After 1st week was reduced to 90ml. interferon. Platelets held at hi 40's low 50's until last week they went down to 31. White and red cells took a big dive also. Only on 9th shot. Wondering if they will reduce dose more and let me resume tx when blood levels recover. Have been off all meds for 4 days including ribivirin. Will a lower dose of interferon be effective, and should I be on the ribivirin while I take a break from interferon? My viral load went down to almost zero in a month so don't want to just stop tx. Have not had a biopsy because of possible bleeding cuz of low platelets. Am geo 1. My dr. is checking to see about lowering dose more but wondering if it will be a waste of time and if a lower dose will do any good. Will not be able to resume any tx till blood levels go up but don't want to loose any progress made.
Being cirrhotic my platelets run lower then normal anyway, at week 31 my level had dropped to 36 with no dose reduction. Having weekly CBC"S, i have bounced from 36 to 60 back to 50 and was in the 40"s for awhile so yes they do bounce on their own.
I asked my hepo about eltrombopag and he said their not giving it to hcv patients. Is advice don't get in any knife throwing contests. If they would drop to 30 or below he would just reduce the interferon. Best to you
I don't believe the eltrombopag is yet part of HCV treatment, but ask your doctor about the possiblity of using it. The only other solution is interferon reduction. 30 is danger level but they will allow you to restart with reduced interferon once it gets up to 50 (and it will). They may allow you to continue at a lower level. It depends on your doctor.
It is unlikey that they will completely stop you. They only do that if platelets, neutrophils or HGB cannot be kept above danger levels at all. They will bounce back. Be patient.
The drug is called eltrombopag,
Google it and give your doctor the information.
AT START VILAL LOAD AT 3 MI AND AT 6 WEEKS .5 AND BLOOD TEST WAS GOOD PLATELETS WAS AT 51 AND AT 9 WEEKS RED AND WHITE CELLS WERE TO LOW AND PLATELETS AT 31 AND SHE CALL MONDAY 15 th SAID STOP FOR NOW SHE WONT LET ME GO NO LOWER .THE RED AND WHITE CELLS I CAN GET NEAPOGEN. PROCRIT .BUT WERE CAN YOU GET OR TRY NEW DRUG FOR BOOSTING PLATETLET .
If the doctor has suspended treatment it's all very complicated.
You can continue with platelets at 31 but you can't really let them go much lower.
The main point is you virological response to the treatment-what is your viral load and has it been checked since starting treatment?
Missing one or more doses of interferon is not desirable.
There is a new drug for boosting platelets in advanced trials.
