I also have cirrhosis, and it was recommended that I get vaccinated for both pneumonia and influenza before tx - which I did.One less thing to worry about, especially at a time when it could be a deal breaker, as far as continuing tx, not to mention, potentially life threatening.
Best of luck to you, Pam
Cirrhotics should be vaccinated against HAV, HBV, (if they show they are not already immune to these viruses) pneumonia and the latest flu shots. This is because patients with cirrhosis have weak immune systems. Any one of these infections can have a serious impact on the patient's health due to the liver's weakened condition. This can include increased damage to the liver, increased complications of liver disease and liver failure and death.
Mortality from influenza is increased in patients with cirrhosis. Therefore, these patients should receive annual injections of influenza vaccine. During flu season cirrhotics are part of the high risk groups that are given priority for obtaining the vaccine.
As far as other levels of liver disease or treatment, there is no standard recommending all of these vaccinations. Obviously they can't hurt. As you will never have to worry about becoming infected with these viruses.
Cheers!
