psyllium fiber

by St. George, May 18, 2006 12:00AM
Does anyone here use psyllium fiber daily for bowel health and if so are they clear of the virus?

I take a dosage every day along with stool softeners because I take long-term narcotics for chronic back pain.  If I did not my insides would have turned to concrete a long time ago.  I am currently awaiting hep-c treatment through my local VA.  They are currently denying my treatment because I suffer from chronic depression/anxiety which accompanies my severe back pain.  The providers are afraid I'll drive off a bridge. I have been on this regimen for several years as I have been on narcotics for several years.  One initial consequence of psyllium is flatulence, a lot of it.  If you take tablet fiber in lieu of powered psyllium you won't be quite so offensive.  Hope this helps a little bit. Taking the stool softeners along with the psyllium will help you pass the bolus of fiber you have taken to insure your alimentary canal remains properly operational. Best Wishes

Also, how long does it take to get Heptimax results back?

Hi, I don't know if youre inferring from you post that you think that psyllium husk might rid you of the virus, cause it sure won't but it will rid you of stuff in your bowel you don't need there, ha ha! I personally use this product called Ultimate Fiber, I've used many PH products before and this one is by far the best in my opinion...it's very fine so it's not so hard on the system, I just use one teaspoon a day (it says to use two tablespoons, that's too much for me.) Just mix it really, really well, that's the trouble I think sometimes, people don't mix it properly...It's really good stuff...

Don't forget the stool softener. Especially if you are just starting to use fiber.

by GoofyDad, May 19, 2006 12:00AM
Interesting that Forsee doesn't view the flatulence as a problem. Mayhaps the cute little muffin enjoys being all gassy?

I was advised to avoid the PS around the riba doses - could hinder absorbtion the Doc said. Never had a prob with it creating flatulence myself.

Sacre bleu! T'was me who went to the Princess of Pee complaining of the smelly pee. To paraphrase, she told me to quit whining and keep eating. Says it's good for ya.

Say - weren't you the Vagisil guy?

Maybe it's just too early for another stool thread to garner much interest. Why not wait a few more days St. George and run it up the flag pole again. Mike

My new kitty-cat got into my psyllium powder and ate a bunch. Now his belly is all bloated like a soccer ball and he's very letharic. He seems to cry and wince whenever he passes gas - but I think he's too blocked-up to go poo. Does he need to need go to the vet, or can I just give mim some stool softener? Anyone know anything about psyllium?

PS He's a mackerel tabby, and I decided to name him Silly. Has anyone else ever had a mackerel tabby?

Don't know why, but this seems the perfect thread to post a link to a story in yesterday's news. http://tinyurl.com/ln4j3

While the last sentence may be troublesome to most, it does give hope for those for whom eharmony.com didn't work out :)

Back to topic, drink LOTS of water if you take psyllium or you may end up a lot worse than when you started. Think CONCRETE :) And as Goof says, space your psyllium a couple of hours away from your riba dosing. Same thing for antacids and I believe even Flax.

Well gotta go eat a banana now.

The ONLY thing that will get rid of the virus is Interferon treatment at this time.  Nothing else is currently on the market nor will anything help achieve zero.

The two choices are wait and pray new drugs come out someday or do the treatment. But nothing else will help you to clear.

this is a troubled thread. Good place to post one of our customary foodfight topics :
<a href="http://www.gastrojournal.org/article/PIIS0016508506006925/fulltext">Editorial in May <em>Gastroenterology</em> suggests it's OK to have an occasional drink after all, provided you drink some coffee the next morning </a>.

by Forseegood, May 19, 2006 12:00AM
I agree with Mike Simon, just too early in the game to post another poopy thead, especially since the last one was sooooo impressive....that's why this one fizzled out, or should I use another phrase?

People, that's why I keep saying that this Ultimate Fiber is the best psyllium powder, cause it's ultra fine, therefore less "concrete like"

though I think sometimes that maybe I could go get a yucky trader joes psyllium powder and just put it in my food processor, and get the same deal, and it would be a little cheaper for me, perhaps you've all helped stumble on to something? I just think that would be too much hassle and I've had that powder all over my counter...yes, I do drink a lot of water with it, I actually put it into some aloe vera juice and a little fruit juice and mix it all up...I never, never have a problem with constipation if I do this...I'm squeaky clean, inside and out! Notice I've kept this post above board and to the point!!!!

I'm trying to read Willing's article but my puter has a hard time accepting cookies nowadays since I switched to this super duper guard system...dang...

I drank in 2-3 beers a week prior to treating and recently started drinking the same, all with my doc's blessing. Did not drink during treatment but I do understand the point of the editorial. Yet, I don't think it's moderate drinkers like me who have a problem not drinking during treatment, so maybe I don't get the point of the editorial. Maybe the medical community needs to put more efforts into getting heavy drinkers off alcohol as opposed to simply excluding them from treatment.

gee, I wish I could read that article.. anyway, I agree with you, if youre not a moderate drinker, 2 or 3 beers a week is a joke...how can you get a buzz on that??? get my point? There's no such thing as 2 or 3 beers a week for some people, more than anyone knows...

actually, they seem to be leaning towards wine : <em>"a preference for wine appears to be more beneficial"</em>, but my favorite line was the reminder that <em>"cardiovascular disease remains by far the leading cause of death in the Western world and that a minority of"</em> HCV <em>" chronically infected patients would be expected to die of liver disease, even under the gloomiest of projections"</em>. I've cut out even the occasional glass since I found out about my relapse, but I'll raise a glass of carrot juice to that. Kinda goes along with my ramblings below about not really needing that much insurance after a certain point.

Hi, still haven't read the article, but I'll get this fixed when I get the ambition...

Anyway, don't know if they were referring to this one particular study...

But I read another study on the study re people who drink one glass of wine having better *heart health* then even non-drinkers???

So they assumed that a glass of wine a day was better then not drinking anything at all for heart health according to their findings...

Anyway, they looked deeper into this study and found out that many of the participants of this study were non-drinkers *because* of prior health problems that didn't relate to the heart (hence, they didn't always report them.) That's why they stopped drinking and became non-drinkers in the first place....

Then they found out that some of these ailments the non-drinkers complained of were precursors to heart disease...

So yeah, I wish they'd conduct some of these studies a little more carefully, even though it's extremely difficult to get all the variables right....

this is why you see so many studies contradict each other in my view...a lot depends on who was conducting the study, the control group in particular, etc...I know I maybe an idiot, but sometimes I rely on my own interior logic and intuition along with information I get from studies...

sounds good : I think I'll have another glass of carrot juice. And you were telling me I was over-analyzing.. I can't say I've tracked this topic that much, but I thought it was funny to see an editorial in the journal of the American GI Assn of all places taking such a relaxed perspective.

like I said before, takes one to see one...and youre right about watching your dog nap, or just watching animals at all, they aren't busy projecting into the future, into the past, what if what if what iffing to death, they take life as it comes and seem grateful to just be alive...and they call them dumb beasts...

forgot, still haven't read the article, but youre saying the gastro journal has a relaxed view of drinking? ever been to a medical convention??? what a bunch of juicers, ha ha ha! just kidding, for the most part...

Well, I was going to throw in a chimp joke but things are getting too philosophical :) Thanks for the discussion and I'll raise a glass of Fiji water to that. And yes, we can learn a lot from animals and nature.
