question

Is there a window period for Hepatitis? If so what is it?
Can Symptoms appear after a month from possible exposure?
Are Runny nose and slight fever a symptom of Hep?

About 5 1/2 weeks ago I had unprotected sex with a friend of mine and I am worried that I could have caught something. What hep should i be most worried about?

Hep B is much more likely to be transmitted through sex than hep C.

The average incubation period for hep is 50 days, with a range from 2 weeks to 6 months.  With each day  past day 50, the antibody test is more accurate.

You are in the unusual (and good) position of being able to have your partner tested along with you.

If your friend is neg after 50 days or so,  there is almost NO chance you are pos.  The chance that both of you are in the window period is VERY low, almost 0.

there is a vaccine for hep b, which is very effective, three shots at 1,3 and 6 months.

Can't give good answers without more information. What type of Hep virus A, B, or C? If none then forgetaboutit. If you do come back positive from the test, you need to see a specialist to determine more information: viral load, genotype, liver function and stage. Once these facts are known you can get a pretty good idea what you might be in for.

My guess is your fine, but you should get tested anyway for peace of mind. It is worth the price of the tests and getting jabbed in the arm a few times.

Don't worry, just get the tests for HAV, HBV, and HCV. They'll probably through in an HIV test as a bonus :)

Does the fever typically come and go? Is a runny/congested nose associated with Hep?

I am going to the doctor tomorrow. If I test tomorrow do you think it would show if i was negative?

I'm 20 years old, what are the chances that I fight off Hep?
My friend said she was clean, but maybe she didn't know
i'm pretty scared...thanks for your help

The incubation period, from the time of exposure to the virus until the onset of the disease, is from about one to six months, also depending on the strength of the virus you've contracted.  Early symptoms include poor appetite, lack of interest in food, nausea, aching muscles and joints, and light fever.  Sometimes you may not even experience symptoms until years later.

Go to http://liverfoundation.org for more info.

Which hep you have, depends on which hep you were exposed to.  Ask your friend.

Whatever the case, stop wondering and go get tested...for everything.  God willing, you will be ok and a bit wiser.

Good luck sweetie!
