I have cirrhosis of the liver ( stage 4) with hepatitis c. My doctor did not tell me that liver cirrhosis could be regenerated with proper treatment. I am so glad that I found this information. I am not alone in this situation. I pray for us all.

Well praise the lord. I was under the impressionthat when liver cells were dead that they were unable to regenerate. The light at the end of the tunnel just got a little brighter.

Thanks for posting that, Jenny.  The presentation said 10% could regress from cirrhosis to 0 damage, but I'm almost afraid to hope that hard.

And a friend of mine, who was treated by Dr. Shiffman, went from stage 4 to stage 0 at 7 years post SVR. Unbelievable!!!

Oops, this comment was posted twice and I posted on the other one.  See http://www.hivandhepatitis.com/2009icr/ddw/docs/070709_a.html
for a report from the Digestive Disease Week meeting by Mitchell Shiffman (good thing I looked up the link, I misquoted the reference on the other post).  If I recall correctly it was a conference presentation and may not have appeared in a journal yet.

Fibrosis is reversible.  80% of study patients who killed the virus on TX reversed bridging fibrosis and all of those with portal fibrosis cleared all fibrosis when biopsied 5-6 yrs. later (after finishing treatment successfully).  Pretty inspiring for us all.

Your liver can regenerate unless you have fibrosis. this is where there is scarring of the liver and sort of like scar tissue it cant regenerate back to healthy cells.
