toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection.  One can carry it without symptoms as it is typically held in check by the immune system.  It can also be cured with certain antibiotics.  There are some forms of latent toxoplasmosis that apparently are resistent to meds.  People whose immune systems are compromised are more at risk (people with HIV, those on chemo, etc) from toxoplasmosis.

Women risk passing toxoplasmosis to their infants if they get it for the first time around the time of pregnancy.  I saw one article that suggested that being co-infected with hcv made mother to child vertical transmission of toxoplasmosis more of a risk.

Toxoplasmosis is also thought to have a role in the development of some mental disorders.

Toxoplasmosis can be spread via blood transfusions, sharing needles, etc.
