sore tongue

The last two days my husband tongue is realy sore.  He has spots on the tongue.  Is this caused by the rx?  Does anyone know how to make it better?  Of course this is a holiday so I can not call the dr office and it is not an emergency.  If anyone can help, please let me know.

Uh oh I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the sore(s) on his tongue are due to the interferon and nothing (and I mean nothing) I did all 72 weeks could get rid of them and they HURT like hell and really made me insane.  My GI had no idea what it was and wanted to biopsy my tongue (oh no thank you very much I can't imagine THAT pain) but the second I went to see Dr. Jacobson he knew.

he's seen patients that have had them so bad they've had to quit.

I hope to God that something will work a miracle on his tongue - IF I have to ever retreat believe it or not after all of the horrid things that happen that's one of the ones I am the most afraid of LOL. God I hated them I am SO sorry this has happened to you.

But on a good note the week I quit the interferon they went right away.

Then I ate everything in the house, both local grocery stores and every restaurant I could find AND SMILED LIKE CRAZY AS I DID.  Ah food tasting good and not hurting my mouth after a year and a half was MARVELOUS!!!!!!!!!!

It really made me appreciate the most simple of things :)

Gk -- I take a mouthwash from doc

here's the ingredients:

NYSTAT/ERYTH/DIPHEN SUS

I dunno if that's the magic mouth wash - but it works for me.

Also - there are some night time relief sprays or gels that you can purchase over the counter --- usually in the denture section for 'DRY night mouth"

Keep hubby hydrated with water well...

Hugs,

Meki

I just want to thank everyone for their imput for helping me find something for my husband's sore mouth.  I will call the dr in the morning.  He is so miserable right now and does not want to eat.  Believe me he needs to eat because he is skin an bone with this treatment.  I don't think 24 weeks will ever get here.

My GI prescribed a swish and swallow med called Carafate.  It worked wonders for me.  Cleard the tongue up in about 2 days.  Never did find anything to help with the cracking at the corners of the mouth.

Finished 48 weeks of tx on 4/13/07
Hoping for SVR on 9/20 07

Agreed; I think I'll stick with the current rat poison for now.

Me too, I'm 59.  Drs are reluctant to prescribe it due to the bad press.  I'm told it helps eradicate the virus as well.  I've never felt the need to ask for it.

I saw an article a while back that discussed the antiviral properties of thalidomide, possibly to be used as an adjunct to SOC? Man, I dunno… I’m old enough to know some kids from back in the day…

Maybe try Oragel for temporary relief?

Yeah, this stuff can be a pain. I’ve had dry cracks in the corners of my lips, a hard white plaque on the top of my tongue, and a couple of minor ulcers on the side of the tongue. My doc prescribed Nyoxin (sp?) for the white plaque, thinking it was a thrush thing, but to no avail. Everything else I’ve just learned to live with for the last couple of years. I hear Magic Mouthwash provides relief, but I keep forgetting to ask for it :).

Good luck,

Lithping Bill

I have it sometimes and I suspect it's from the interferon as it tends to come post injection.  I take a probiotic called Flora Source and that seems to help.

Also, Canker sores-http://dentalstore.stores.yahoo.net/glyoxide.html
Thalidomide(seriously) works wonders on mouth & throat ulcers if they persist for the long term

good advice from deb. i think the magic mouthwash can be made up by the pharmasist and does need a prescription from doc. i'm not 100% sure about this but it may be worth a call to a pharmacy.

yes, it is. There is a "magic mouthwash" that your doc should be able to prescribe. It helps a lot. I do not know what can be used that is over the counter, sorry i can't help with that one.
