I would have to do more research and question my Dr’s decision before jumping into Statins.
Statins are a “wonder drug” for lowering cholesterol but with your liver damage at stage 3, I would proceed with caution.
Statins work in the liver and every commercial I have seen advises not to take if you have liver problems. Zetia works in the intestines.
Was the Zetia working?
If my memory serves me correctly, MikeS is taking statins and he had a TP. He is far more knowledgeable on the subject than I am and hopefully he will see this post and give his input.
Zetia is part of a class of drugs called cholesterol absorption inhibitors. It works in the digestive tract by blocking the absorption of cholesterol from things that you eat. It is unique in that it works just at the "brush border" of the small intestine. Because less cholesterol is delivered from the digestive tract to the liver (which depletes the liver's stores of cholesterol), the liver reacts by taking cholesterol out from the blood, helping to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood.
Statins work directly in the liver. Statins work by attacking in the liver the enzyme system that produces the cholesterol in the liver. And that forces the liver cells to pull it from the blood and thereby lowers your cholesterol. And so our cholesterol comes down because we stop the production in the liver.
statins will not re-activate the virus. quite the opposite in fact. studies suggest that some statin drugs may help stop the hepatitis C virus from replicating.
Plus: bonus! If you catch H1N1 flu and are hospitalized, your chances of recovery are doubled if you're on a statin, according to one report.
All I can tell you about simvastatin is: it's cheap, it works well enough that my doctor has allowed me to half my dose from 40 mg. / day down to 20 mg. / day, and my ALT/AST are better than they were before I started taking it.
I've never heard of statins being a risk factor for allowing HCV relapse the way bolus doses of steroids may be.
