svr and iron levels

by hipps, Mar 10, 2006 12:00AM
Hallo everybody,
I need advice. I am familiar about iron levels and having hep c. I was aware abaut it whole time during the tx. So, I know a lot about iron and treatment about iron during tx. But, what I need to know now is how to treat iron supplement after tx (1 year svr)? Can I take some multivitamins and multiminerals containing iron inside? What differences does iron makes to my liver now in svr status? Can my liver be damaged with iron even I am svr?
Thank you for your support and advices,
hipp

Do you have reason to believe that your iron levels are deficient?
If not why take a supplement.
Supplements are only required if we are not getting enough of a vitamin or mineral from our regular diet.
Anyone with a good balanced diet has no need of supplements.
If you insist on taking them, you might as well play safe and get iron free.
Unless of course you are lacking iron-a blood test will reveal if you are.
I would be surprised if your iron levels are not bang on normal,as you do not mention any symptoms of iron deficiency

O.k, that is true. But my iron levels are good now (1 year svr). I want to take some multivit and multimin additive to boost my imune system, to improve health in general. So, considering the fact here in Croatia we dont have (as much as we want to have) possibility to take multivit formulas without iron, I am wondering is it safe to take common multivit formula additive (with some iron in it) and be sure it will not do something wrong?
Thank you all,
hipp

If you are worried that taking a supplement containing iron will cause you to relapse then don't.
At 12 months post tx clear your vitamin tablet is not going to re-infect you or bring virus back to life!!!!!!!!!!!!!

for adult males iron is Not a healthy supplemnt !..increases incidence of cardio-vascular problems..Swedish study examined health of men ;found that higher iron levels in drinking water correlated w higher incidence of heart problems..Women need more iron esp before menopause...Unless your Dr recommends i would steer clear of iron supplemnts-but just my opinion, take w/ pinch of salt-another problematic substance..

Thank you for advices. I know I am realy pain in the ass :-) but I ask to be sure. It is clever to ask not to wonder in the darkness of ingnorace. I KNOW I can not get relapse, I just wanted to be sure of my liver damage due to taking iron (fibrosys stage 1). That is all.
Thanks again,
hipp
