throat irritation and strep F? (other posts are fine)

by fishdoc, Jun 27, 2006 12:00AM
All deep throat jokes aside, I have been plagued with an irritated throat right where the pendant hangs on a choker for a couple of months.  A couple of others at work have complained also, not a bad sore throat, just irritated.  The lab manager went to the Dr. and they did a strep test, and identified hers as Strep F, said they had never heard of it.  Her white count was not elevated. Now I am wondering if several of us are passing it around, although we certainly don't do the obvious things like drink after each other.  I have just assumed its a tx thing..... is this common or should I call the Dr and swallow a qtip?

hi- i have that, too. mine is from the new gerd i now have during tx!
mouth sores can live down there, too.
if you have irratated tummy, that could be it.
if it's an infection, get help right away.
good luck!

I would get it checked out by your doctor.  I have read about a few throat sides but mostly soreness or dry mouth.  I would have it checked out just to be safe.  Best to not play around while your going through treatment.  Maybe others will have some better idea's on it though.  take care!

You didn't say anything about not sharing other things...since you brought up the deep throat thing. LOL

If everyone in your lab has this, it sounds like a bug to me!  Hopefully your WBC is not low, as this could cause a worse infection for you.

I know your Dr. is a ways away. I would check with your PCP as soon as possible. We don't need any new buggers than the ones we already have!

Yeah, wbc are at 3.93.  I guess I need to go check it out, strep of any kind is scary.  I really can't imagine how we could be passing it around, I mean we share the same phones and toilet seats........but thats it.  Comin and goin I guess.......

If you are using the same scale as my lab, 4 is the start of normal for WBC.

I had my g-daughter spend the weekend while hubby was away working a Champ car race.  That monday she tested positive for strep so I called my GP who put me right on antibiotic, a few more days to go.  You really don't want to take a chance on tx.  But after a month and your WBC is still "up" you probly should get a culture.

Just my thoughts and I hope you are clear of any strep.

I have had a sore throat for 31 weeks. That is when I started treatment. It stays sore at the very bottom of my throat near voice box and when I am tired my voice gets very weak. Like all things I blame it on the meds. In my case though I do believe it is some side affect of medications. Hope yours gets better. Dale

Hey fishdoc --the rough throat is a definite sx of the ribavirin (says so right on the paperwork).  I don't even know I have a rough throat until the first telephone call of the day -- theN I am trying to go thru all that throat clearing stuff and talk at the same time.  Do go get the test to check for strep.  You have got enough of the alphabet running around your bod without "F's" too. Hey -- we have finally gotten relief from the 100 degree days -- how about you.  It is amazing how cool the low 90's are.  Even got 2" of rain thrown in there.

Jeralice -- good to see you post.  How is life on the Llano?  We went camping there last month (llanorivercamping.com) and it was so cool -- thought of you.  I wanted you to know you were a contributor to my decision to extend treatment.  I was mightily impacted by your post of relapse when you had 45 virons at week 12 and were clear thereafter.  My history is the same -- I had 40 virons at week 12.  So, with much regrets, I have gone into overtime -- now on week 50/56.  That will give me 36 weeks clear after a most sensitive PCR (<2).  How is treatment #2 going for you?  How do you feel?

Hey Fishy, I am dealing with the exact same thing.  When I went to the clinic to get my meds refilled I told them how bad my throat (same area) hurt.  They had the Doc come in and do a throat swab.  That was back on the 28th of June.  They just called me last Sat! and said the culture came back positive for strep.  I had a BAD case of strep a couple of years ago,  this does round does not feel anything like that, and I have no fever, just feel like poopoo!

They started me on Keflex 500mg 2x's a day on Sat. (10 day supply).  Yesterday took myself to my internist (reg doc) because my lungs are burning and I cough and cough and sound like I am full of fluid.  He listened, did xray and started me on Advair along with a Abutrol rescue inhaler.  He also said my throat looked fine.  Told him the coughing irritates it.  He also checked my Reds & Whites, reds hanging at 10.5, whites normal........ w/strep?  Very confusing!

Hope you go get yours checked out, like others said, nothing to mess around w/while on tx.

Best to ya

OOPS, messed up on my dates, ding **** here!  It was back at the end on MAY that they did the swab and I just found out last Sat., that's when I started the Keflex!  In the meantime, just gargled w/saltwater and ate alot of Blue Bell sugarless pops.  They were the best help!

Is my counting off?  I thought we had 6 to go?????????????

How could it take a month to let you know you have strep?  I thought that stuff was nasty.   Glad you are on the Keflex now.  Geesh!  I know your WBC and ANC are still fine count wise, but for YOU they are very low.  Didn't you start at like 8  WBC and a gazillion ANC's?  Wish you could get a couple of shots of Neupogen to boost those ANC's. Can't remember what they are, but you need more.  Man, I am sorry these last weeks are so rough

Hey friole, yes, it has blessedly cooled off, down in the low 90's, wet stuff fell from the sky, life is good!!  Hows life treating you?  I am going to make an appt. and get my throat checked, heck its not like my deductible isn't paid up!!  thanks for all the responsed, I don't have reflux, but it sure sounds similar to others here.......strep may be opportunistic on irritations.......

I have been off of therapy for 6 mths. & I still have the clearing of the throat issue everyday? At times, it is really thick, not yellow. I can't imagine how this can continue so long?

Has anyone else experienced this?

I'd visit your doc or an ear nose and throat doc  A  feeling of needing to clear your throat all the time should be evaluated as it could be from something relatively benign but it can also be a symptom of more complicated origins.

Throat clearing is a very common sympton of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) or GERD (reflux). Treatment is usually PPI's like Nexium or OTC H-2 inhibitors like Zantac. Like Kalio says, see an ENT as they are the best person to diagnose the problem. I had throat clearing issues early-on in treatment but they resolved when I got the reflux under control. Hope you feel better soon.
