It looks like your mother has Hepatitis C --- If I am reading this correctly.

You have 2 options ---- retest... or accept this test as fact.

Next... You need to know that having antibodies to hepatitis C does not mean that she has "a LOT" of HCV.

You won't know how much virus she has in her system until she does a VIRAL LOAD test.

And Viral loads get very high... and they mean nothing really.

She may need to get a biopsy done on her liver to determine what --- if any --- damage has occurred.

Once she knows her GENOTYPE --- and then her VIRAL LOAD --- and she has had a BIOPSY - then you can determine what course of action you might want to take with her.

Please read through this forum for about 3 months worth of posts --- check out the JANIS AND FRIENDS website  (you can google it) --- and also check out HCVADVOCATE (google that also)

There is a lot of information available to you - it will take some time to absorb it all - but please read up on it --- and then you can help your mother deal with this disease realistically and appropriately.

Much luck!

I believe, her test only indicates the presence of the antibodies. This means only that she has been exposed. It is possible that she was exposed (and thus has the antibodies) but that her own immune system has cleared the virus spontaneously. Some people do recover spontaneously from hep C infection.

In any case, the next steps are as Meki points out (great information). I just wanted to make sure you knew that the presence of antibodies does not necessarily mean she has active infection.

I would not bother with a re-test for antibodies; the genotype and viral load tests will reveal if the antibody test was a false-positive mistake.
