triple tx and ad's

I'm wondering how long people are continuing using anti-depressants after they are done with tx?
I'd like to eliminate the rest of the pills I've been taking for so long.
Just wondering what others are doing.

Hi,

I was concerned about the depression issues when I started tx. I took the generic for zoloft during tx. I was extremely emotional at times especially toward the end of my incivek pills but I never got depressed. I have read somewhere that AD's can be used to prevent depression so if they did that for me, I am glad. I also read about several people who said they had trouble giving up the AD's when they were supposed to do so. I began tapering off of my AD's by taking one every other day and then continued to reduce the dosage over the last two weeks or so of the treatment and then stopped completely. I had no problem giving them up and didn't notice any change really. I am glad I did that because your body is going through a lot with stopping the other meds.
If you are suffering from depression do not stop taking them at all (even tapering off) without talking to your doctor. It would truly terrible to have gone through all of this and then get nailed by depression. I was comfortable with the route I took but we are different. Take care!

Great question Marty.  I was wondering about this too, since I am so close to the end of tx.  I'll keep an eye on your thread to see what everyone recommends.  Whatever you do, don't stop cold turkey.  I have to check soon with my doc too to see how long the process is (weeks? months?) for stepping down ADs.

I would taper off of them when you feel like all the other drugs are out of your system. After reading other post on here. I would not rush it. It seems it takes a while for the brain to get right after treatment.

If your doctor does not feel you are "clinically depressed"  then there is no need to take an AD.
Be cautious if you  are taken off ,as most ADs will have somewhat of a discontinuation syndrome(that can entail side effects) ,so they usually are tapered over many weeks with monitoring by your doctor..
Good luck..
