type 2b drop out due to suicidal thoughts

by 576468, Aug 13, 2001 12:00AM
Writing for my husband who has Hep C.  First diagnosed in 1992- acute illness, jaundice, low grade fever, high liver enzymes, diffuse fibrosis by biopsy, confirmed by PCR. Concurrent occupational exposure (skin contact) to solvents.  Original infection was probably during Viet Nam Era - received pooled gamma globulin from returning vets, for viral spinal meningitis infection ~1969-72. In 1992, received 3 months of INF A (standard dose 3 x per week) - but depressed & not responding, so dropped out. Year 2000-generally good health but aches and unexplained occasional low grade fever. Told he has type 1c, grade 2/3 liver toxicity & 1,000,000 viral count by VA. Had enlarged spleen for 3 weeks - unexplained - resolved spontaneously.  Gets on VA phase III trial Ribavirin + highest dose INF A / 7 days a week.  Treated for 3.5 months, then thoughts of suicide/homicide. Drops out of trial. Never gets retested. Depression continued till antidepressants (Zolof sp?) 9 months later - now mentally OK. 2001 - VA now says he had type 2b, not 1c - go figure?.  Problem - do we risk another course of treatment with Peg-INF plus Ribavirin or wait for something else?  Last treatment destroyed his independent business - money short. While on high dose he had thoughts of blowing up a local arena by strapping plastic explosives to his body.  Scary! Can antidepressents during treatment keep this from happening again?  Should he try Milk thistle or other herbs instead?  Need advise and don't trust VA anymore.
