using a juicier & ???

a few questions :

1) I have been using a juicier for around a year now (every other day) and had a question, i use several carrots everytime i juice. i know carrots have vitamin A in them, is vitamin A iron?  i use all organic veggies & fruits for this. i add apples, pears, beets,spinach, kale, etc. i change the mix all the time but always use carrots,apples & beets. i have cut back on the apples & beets as they have alot of sugar. trying to avoid the metabolic syndrom, and i'm real close with boarderline BP, glucose,lipids & some belly fat.

2) can the alcohol in a herbal supplement tincture damage the liver? when using a tincture it may call for mixing 20 drops to a glass of water once a day. 45% grain alcohol. it is such a small amount but was curious if it could harm you.

Thanks

Juices, unless you cannnot take in the whole actual food, are generally quite high in carbs and very fattening.  Diabetics should only juice as an antidote to low blood sugar, not on a regular basis.  Juices of wheatgrass and ginger and things like that are fine, but take your fruits and veggies straight.  All of this goes by the wayside during tx, however, when you need the calories.

thanks everyone, great info.

Forseegood , how is it that your name is where mine should be under the title of the thread. that is really weird  and the first time i have seen that happen. this place if full of susprises and god bless the ones on tx that have to put up with it. not sure i like this new format all the way, some is ok but most was better the old way. unless i was just use to the old forum. i hate changes, especially when it concerns my liver :-)

OH hey, thanks for the tip about juicing ginger...guess you could use that for a lot of things!  juicing ginger never occurred to me...

Susan: I find a real easy way of getting extra fiber in your diet are these capsules from Vitamin Shoppe, they are pretty cheap...you just take one, or maybe two a day, with a glass of water, does the trick for me! "Fiber Force-6" they are online too, maybe you could try them out, or not, ha ha! hope youre well...

It's very good to juice wheatgrass. It is very good for eliminating toxins from the body. I'm growing my own wheatgrass and I will be taking it soon. You need a wheatgrass juicer for that.

I juice beets with carrots and ginger root for flavor. My husband started juicing whole ginger root and saving the juice to use in flavoring, in a bottle in the fridge. I put the ginger juice in my hot cereal on those mornings when I was nauseous.   I don't care for beets other than curried so I started drinking it too. I couldn't handle it during tx. That is one thing you don't want coming back up!!
   My herbalist makes glycerites instead of using alcohol.
BTW: spinach and kale are high in iron, not good for the liver

I don't take supplements.  I've tried juicing before in the past, but I haven't been able to stick with it.  I try to eat good foods, nutritionally balanced, etc.  I've had blood tests multiple times that show my calcium, potassium, sodium, glucose, iron, are all doing in the perfectly normal ranges on the last 4-5 tests that I've had.  When I used to eat more on the red meat side, I had a high ferritin, but I cut out so much of it that my ferritin has been fine now.  I still eat cereal, which has a lot of vitamins & probably too much iron in it, but I eat it anyway because I like it.  My sodium had a few times where it was slightly below normal, but I just cut out a little water and it's fine. I was drinking water to the extreme.  I've never had a problem with my calcium because I haven't given up dairy foods, because there again, I like them.  Hey, Jim, if you can drink alcohol, I figure I can do these cheats with my diet.  My cholesterol is fine.  The only real problem I have really had is w/the Hep and my skin and some how do you say this....irregularity.    I know that lacking of fiber is not the reason for this because eat plenty of fiber.  Anyway, that's about it.

forgot to say, because of those issues Jim mentioned, when I do juice (and I do this once a day at most) I put a lot of water in it, and then sip it very, very slowly, so my system can better absorb the juiced carbs...I juice cause I hate the way beets taste, and I find a little carrot, beet and cabbage juice really good for the old tummy, among other things...but he's right, I eat veggies and fruits all day and they are better wholly eaten...on treatment though, I would think juicing this little and in this manner, is a good way to get your veggies if you don't like the taste of veggies on treatment (a common complaint from what I hear) also capsule form....

Hi! no vit a is not iron, but too much of that is hard on the liver also, some of this depends on how we individually express and absorb nutrients...if youre curious, I'd get a good doc to measure all the vitamins you have in your system, for any deficiencies....then if everything is alright (and I suppose it will be cause you haven't even treated yet from what I know) I'd just go a little easier on the carrots...maybe a half big one every day? or a few small ones, that's what I do and never had any problems....also beta carotene from veggies, isn't necessarily absorbed the same way that taking supplementation vitamin A is...A good nutritionist could help you on some of these issues (and some of the data on some of these things change as the years go by, so not all of this is fixed in stone either)

To be on the safe side, I don't use alcohol tinctures...but that's just what I do...

Not a real "juicer" (or nutritional) expert but I thought carrots have pretty much the highest sugar content -- more than apples and beets. Also, don't juicers eliminate the pulp? Pulp is fiber and slows down carbohydrate absorption. If you're concerned about metabolic syndrome/carbs/sugars, etc, -- it  would seem that you'd be better off either eating the stuff whole or using a blender where you'd get the fiber.
