I am a 34 yr old woman. Dont drink. dont smoke. Dont eat meat. Exercise daily.  I was in ER last week with sharp pains under my chest bone. Excruciating pain. worst I ever felt. It comes on when I indulge in rich foods that I normally never eat due to strict diet. I have to go back next week for more blood work. the ER doctor was concern with my current blood test results.

What does this mean? IM scared. please advice

it could be gall baldder related. your symptoms are classic signs of gall bladder disease or stones.

I think your ALT and AST is not that high.  The doc probably ruling out Hep A, B, and C.  Hopefully is A, which is minor stuff.  But even if its B and C, it's not the end of the world.  I was diagnosed with B 6 months ago.  This site has been helpful for support and info.  Best wishes on your results.

FYI, there is some science in those numbers.

The ratio of AST to ALT has some clinical utility, but has important limitations. In many forms of acute and chronic liver injury or steatosis (fatty infiltration of the liver), the ratio is less than or equal to 1. This is particularly true in patients with hepatitis C. However, an AST/ALT ratio greater than 2 characteristically is present in alcoholic hepatitis. A recent study7 of 140 patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH; confirmed by liver biopsy) or alcoholic liver disease found a mean AST/ALT ratio of 0.9 in patients with NASH and 2.6 in patients with alcoholic liver disease. Within the population studied, 87 percent of patients with an AST/ALT ratio of 1.3 or less had NASH (87 percent sensitivity, 84 percent specificity). The severity of NASH as measured by the degree of fibrosis increased, as did the AST/ALT ratio. A mean ratio of 1.4 was found in patients with cirrhosis related to NASH. Wilson's disease, a rare problem, can cause the AST/ALT ratio to exceed 4.5 While these ratios are suggestive of certain conditions, there is too much overlap between groups to rely on them exclusively when making a diagnosis.

Hi Scardy.  Did they work you up in the ER with something other than labs, such as an ultrasound or CT, or -- did they just pull labs on you?  Did your discharge instructions from the ER tell you to come back if you continue to have severe gut pain?  Did they tell you to followup with a doctor on Tuesday, or.... is there a doc's name and phone number on those discharge instructions?

You should not just sit there in that kind of pain waiting for someone to tell you something on Tuesday.  With the kind of pain you describe, you need to be seen by someone as soon as possible - even if it means getting back to the ER today.

Best of luck.

First I would like to know. 1. Was that pain under the bottom or the top of your chest bone? (The clinical name is the sternum). If it was the the bottom. I would seriously suggest you have an ultrasound to check for ball stones. You see when a person has developed gall stones (easily treatable using a large variety of techniques.) and then ingests high fat content foods. The ball bladder puts bile into the system via the gall bladder duct to br3eak down some of the more complex fats and fatty acids. If there is a gall stone present that impedes the flow of bile this can produce the types of pains you are describing. A few of the more common home remedies are drinking water that has lemon juice in it (1 teaspoon per 8 ounces.) and 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil every other day for 2-3 weeks. This softens the gall stones due to the citric acid being ingested along with chemical components that make up gall stones such as pigments or calcium based chemicals. In any case based upon your rather brief description I would. Definitely have the gall bladder looked at. I had been there and done that. No fun @ all!

Much Love and God bless you and your's with perfect Peace, Love, Joy, Health and Happiness!

Alternate treatment is faith and knowing. Let it be taken care of.

Matthew 21:21 "Then you know and have no doubt is your heart. Then, not only can you do unto the fig tree as I have, but you will tell this Mountain. "Go! Throw yourself into the Sea!" And it will be done. When you believe you will receive all that you ask for in prayer.

Peace
