I was going to ask the same question this morning. I need to know what kind of vitamins to take to keep my RBC,WBC & Hemoglobin level.

Yes, a mutivitamin without iron is the best choice. I think maybe Centrum Silver doesn't contain iron but you better check the label first. I doubt very much that vitamins will help if you are one of us unlucky ones that develop hemolytic anemia. But, at least you know you are getting the necessary nutrients. Mike

Yes, centrum silver contains no iron. I've read the label and that's what I take.
Mike, I've asked this but it probably got lost in the posts, or perhaps no one knows anything about it, but maybe you do.
Do you know anything about MSM (sulphur). I've read some good things about it, but I was wondering if it could hurt the liver in any way. I appreciate your input. :)

I don't know a thing about it. Sorry. Mike

Thanks Mike, that was a quick answer !!

If you eat a good, balanced diet it shouldn't be necessary to take multivitamins. I think the fewer things we take, the better it is for our livers. I am sure I read somewhere that large doses of vit A and vit D were bad for people with Hep C = maybe not, but why bother?

by mikesimon, Aug 09, 2003 12:00AM
multis aren't megadoses and are usually okay. Mike

IMHO, we have some special needs during tx.  We can boost our system when our diet may not be perfect, and we don't have to take megadoses.
Several "extra" vitamins may help with some of the sides.
Anti-oxidants are good to help minimize cell damage (my skin and hair are much better than without these last year on tx).  I would include B-complex, C, and E.  Calcium is good for many of us, especially since some on tx won't get enough weight-bearing excercise; calcium is good for bones and teeth, among other things.  I would also include Folic acid, which helps the liver repair itself and helps the nervous system.  Several of these also help to build blood cells.
Unlike herbal supplements, vitamins and many minerals have been thoroughly studied and their effects proven scientifically; their dosages are standardized.

Add B12, E and fish oil. If your liver is not in bad shape and your iron level is not high, you can also take vit C.

Get Well...

I didn't take a multi vitamin in the beginning of tx, then started taking them about the 4th week into tx and found it gave me more energy and helped boost my appetite.--HD

My doc approved the following vitamins while on TX. I had been taking for years. (before Hep C).  Mega B (extra B-12)complex (no iron), E, Soya Lechticin (SP?), Garlic, and started Milk Thistile (after hep was found).  I was also taking C , but, doc said no to C... cause it can store in the liver. Many trains of thought on Milk Thistle..I choose to us it due to studies done in Germany with alcohol related chirrious.  I also drank almost 2 gallons of fluids eah day (on TX). 1 water and 1 gal.  diluted clear juice... Cranberry worked best for me.  Always check with your doc before adding anything to the body.  I can't stresssssss the importance of fluids while on TX.  Has shown to help retain hair as well.  WHo KNOWS???  Take care and God Bless!

PS Anyone heard from Travelmom?

As long as you don't have cirrhosis most vitamins and stuff are fair game for us.
Iron is not good to take in suppliment form but it's ok in food. We still need iron in our diet somewhere. If you don't get ANY iron you are leaving yourself wide open for anemia. Just get it from food and you'll be ok.
I took "Mens 1-a-day" vitamins cuz they don't have iron and they're smaller and easy to swallow. I also added some anti-oxidents like vitamins C & E. Along with that I also took Folic Acid. Since the jury is still out on Milk Thistle I avoided that.
I never tool any suppliments before tx so I think they helped me a lot. I never had any problems with red counts and my white counts were low but tolerable....except for when I was blessed with 2 rounds of antibiotics that really killed them.
If we just use common sense and don't try to megadose this stuff you'll be ok and most likely get some benefits outa suppliments.

By the way....I just got my 6 month post PCR drawn last Thursday. So, my countdown has begun. There could be a Dragon Knuckle BBQ at my place in 2 weeks!

It's gonna be negative.  I can just feel it!  BBQ dragon doesn't sound too good today, but I could go for a hamburger and fries.  You've been such a major source of info, inspiration, and, most of all, laughter!  I'me praying for you!!

Funny this just came up with my Dr. Obrien who works with Dr Shiff in Floirda.  I am having low hemoglobin problems.  On 40,000 iu Proctit and he said yesterday for me to start taking GNC Mega Woman and an iron supplement to help get me over the hump.  Was quite surprise at that suggestion but, I really believe in this guy.

Apparently if you are not end stage liver disease we can handle some help from  a multivitamin.  This one in particular is loaed with the B vitamins.. We'll see.

Anything to help these extream side effects I am experiencing. Check with your Dr of course.

DS/ So Fla

PS.. Is anyone else in Florida?
