Viral load doesn't have any effect on the disease process.   The viral load is a pretty useless number when it comes to anything other than determining whether or not treatment is working.

Example:  I have a VERY load viral load (before starting the first round of treatment it was 90,000 and before starting the second round it was 260,000) and I have advanced liver disease.  I know people whose viral loads are in the millions and have hardly any damage.  So yeah, it's a p retty useless number as far as disease progressionis concerned.
